Mount Union 38 Capital 12 by Ric Brienza |
Mount Union running back Nate Kmic ran for 240 yards and scored three times while the Purple Raiders defense held Capital to -31 yards rushing in a 38-12 victory before 4,132 fans at cold and wet Mount Union Stadium Saturday. It was an impressive performance by number one ranked Mount Union over fourth ranked Capital. The Purple Raiders wasted little time in reminding the Crusaders they were in Alliance, marching 73 yards in 10 plays on the opening possession to set the tone as Kmic scored from a yard out, making it 7-0 five minutes into the game. Kmic's 200 yard performance was the fourth in his 12 career starts. He also eclipsed 1,000 yards rushing on the season. He has run for 200 yards against the three best opponents this year, Baldwin-Wallace, Capital and Ohio Northern. The Purple &
White made it 10-0 on their next possession following a Capital three and
out. The Raiders traveled 36 yards in 10 plays before Mike Zimmerman
booted a 32-yard field goal with just over two minutes remaining in the
opening period. The weather wasn't conducive for being outdoors at game time, with temperatures in the low 40's and a steady rain, but it really became tough to deal with late in the first quarter. As the skies opened up and the temperatures began to drop, Capital went back on offense. The heavy rain turned to sleet and then snow as the Crusaders lost one yard on three plays on its second possession. Through two series the Crusaders lost three yards in six plays and lined up to punt from its own 18. With it raining so hard you could hardly see, Darrell Pierce blocked his second punt of the season and Chris Kappas recovered the ball in the endzone for a 17-0 lead. The two teams traded touchdowns in the second stanza. Capital made it 17-6 a little more than midway through the period when Rocky Pentello hit Mike Niedzwiecki from 21 yards out, capping a nine-play, 58-yard drive. Justin Stickley blocked the point after attempt, making it 17-6. The Purple
Raiders answered right away, moving 53 yards in eight plays before Kmic's
11-yard run Capital was fortunate Mount Union didn't add to its lead before intermission. The Crusaders needed nine yards on fourth down from the Raiders 30 but Stickley sacked Pentello for a 14-yard loss, giving the Purple & White the ball at the 44 with 51 seconds and one time out remaining. After moving to Capital's 48, Kmic raced 35 yards down the home sideline before being tripped and losing his balance at the 13. Following an incompletion, Zimmerman's 30-yard field goal attempt missed just to the right. Capital was very lucky it was only 24-6 at halftime. At the break Mount Union had 215 yards to 50 for the Crusaders. The Raiders had 153 rushing yards to Capitals -41. The Purple
& White used some trickery to make it 31-6 in the third period. Pierre
Garcon lined up out to the left and went in motion prior to the snap.
Mike Jorris took the snap and handed off to the junior It was the only touchdown pass for Mount Union in the game, marking the first start in Jorris' career in which he did not throw one, and the first game this season Garcon did not catch one. Capital's final score came two minutes later when Pentello hit Dylan Kelly from a yard out to make it 31-12. Stickley again busted through to block the Crusaders extra point attempt. The final points came from Kmic on an 18-yard run in the first minute of the fourth quarter. That run capped an 11-play, 85-yard march in which Mount Union took 7:07 off the clock. The Purple Raiders held Capital
to -31 yards rushing and 185 total yards while picking up 442 yards Mount Union improved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the OAC and grabbed sole possession of first place in the conference with the win. It was Larry Kehres' 239th career win, moving him past Woody Hayes and into 19th place on college football's all-time win list. Capital fell to 7-1 and 6-1 but would still likely make the playoffs by winning out. The Purple Raiders will host John Carroll next Saturday. Last year Mount Union defeated the Blue Steaks 70-0 at Shula Stadium in University Heights and have won 16 straight in the series. Overall, the Raiders own a 19-2-2 mark.
