How dominant was Mount Union's defense? It limited the Yellow Jackets to just 45 first half yards, 29 of which came on one play, and 133 total yards for the game including only 10 rushing yards on 39 attempts. The Raiders had a season high seven sacks totaling 68 yards in loses, limited Baldwin-Wallace to just two first downs on 15 attempts on third down and zero points in the game. It's the Purple & White's third shutout of the season and they still have not given up a point in either the first or third quarters all year. Baldwin-Wallace threatened to score three times but came up empty each time. It had the first scoring chance of the game midway through the first quarter but missed on a 38-yard field goal attempt after Mike Jorris was sacked and fumbled at the Mount Union 29-yard line. The Purple Raiders limited the Yellow Jackets to eight yards on three plays after the fumble.
The next opportunity came on the Yellow Jackets best drive of the game, a 10-play, 41-yard march early in the second quarter with the game still scoreless that ended with the Purple Raiders' first two sacks of the contest. Matt Kostelnik got to B-W quarterback Andy Gardner on third and 11 from the 19 and then Nick Parr and Justen Stickley combined for a sack on fourth and 20 from the 28. Kostelnik and Sam Vucelich each had three sacks while Parr and Stickley combined for the other. The last Baldwin-Wallace scoring chance came on its last drive of the game but after marching 38 yards in 12 plays to the one Mount Union's defense shut the door again. Two incomplete passes and two rushes for one-yard losses ended the Yellow Jackets final threat and sent the Purple Raiders home with a hard fought win. But all was not good for the Purple & White. The offense was inconsistent all day and if Nate Kmic missed the bus we may still be playing. Kmic was a bright spot once again, rushing for 215 yards on 35 carries in addition to four receptions for 35 yards. His three-yard touchdown run with 15 seconds remaining in the first half made it 14-0 and gave Mount Union a bit of a cushion in the scoreless second half.
Mount Union managed points on just one of three trips into the red zone. Two missed field goals, a 34-yard attempt in the second quarter and a 35-yard try in the third period kept the Jackets within striking distance. But rather than blame Mike Zimmerman, who barely missed on both kicks, lets credit the Baldwin-Wallace defense for performing better than any before it this season against the number one offense in all of Division III. In addition to the missed red zone opportunities, two other drives inside the Yellow Jackets' 30-yard line ended on incomplete passes when the Raiders went for it on fourth down. Penalties also played a big part in the game. For the third straight week, Mount Union was penalized for more than 100 yards. Two defensive penalties, one roughing the quarterback and one pass interference, kept two different Baldwin-Wallace drives alive, and numerous offensive penalties brought back nice gains, including one touchdown that came off the board on a drive in which the Raiders ended up getting no points. A third problem
for Mount Union was turnovers. The Purple & White lost
three fumbles and finished minus one in turnover margin, marking
the first time this season the Raiders lost the turnover battle. Two
of the fumbles came on punts and basically resulted in lost possessions for
Mount Union in the game. The Purple Raiders opened the scoring with 9:36 remaining in the second quarter when Jorris hit a streaking Pierre Garcon down the visitors sideline for a 48-yard touchdown. It capped a four-play, 67-yard drive and was Jorris' 20th touchdown toss of the season compared with just two interceptions. Jorris and Greg Micheli combined to complete 12 of 21 passes for 150 yards with Jorris getting the lions share of the action. Garcon finished with three receptions covering 57 yards. The yardage total was a season low for the junior wide out but was still good enough to lead all receivers in the game. Brandon Boehm added two catches for 31 yards while Anthony Antonucci had two grabs for 17 yards. Defensively, Matt Kostelnik had a team high 11 hits to go along with his three sacks. He also forced a fumble. Pat McCullough recorded 10 hits and also forced a fumble. Mount Union
finished with 378 total yards to 133 for Baldwin-Wallace. Despite the
loss, which drops the Yellow Jackets to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Ohio
Athletic Conference, B-W feels like it can play with the number one team in
the nation and by winning the rest of its games may claim a playoff spot. And they
might be right since an 8-2 record and second place finish in the OAC would
duplicate what Capital did With the win, the Raiders improve to 7-0 overall and 6-0 in conference play and will entertain unbeaten Capital next week. The Purple & White have won 19 straight over the Crusaders, including last year's 34-31 exciting playoff win during the quarterfinal round, and own a 27-12 mark in the overall series. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. from Mount Union Stadium.
