Mount Union 35 by Ric Brienza |
Mount Union defeated Wis-Whitewater 35-28 Saturday in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, bringing the national championship back to Alliance, Ohio for the eighth time in the last 13 years.
Nate Kmic was named the game's Most Outstanding Player after rushing for 185 yards and scoring three touchdowns, including a 95-yard run to equal a championship game record set by Chuck Moore in the 2001 Stagg Bowl. Kmic set a new Division III tournament record with 1,040 rushing yards, breaking Moore's mark of 998 yards in the 2001 tournament.
There were four game changing moments in the contest. Two came within a minute of each other in the third quarter with the goal line stand and subsequent 95-yard touchdown jaunt by Kmic. Another was Mike Jorris' 63-yard scoring strike to Pierre Garcon with 6:32 left in the first period that tied the game at 7-7. That play began a momentum swing after Whitewater controlled the early portion of the game.
Mount Union's defense then shut out Whitewater for two and a half quarters while that first score turned out to be the first of four straight touchdowns by the Raiders. Jorris hit Garcon again with 5:03 remaining in the second stanza from 12-yards to give Mount Union a lead it would never relinquish. At the break it was 14-7 Purple & White. Garcon finished with seven receptions for a game high 107 yards and the two scores. Jorris completed 20 of 28 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
The interception came on the initial drive of game and turned out to be Mount Union's only turnover in the contest. Whitewater later scored when Justin Beaver took it in from two yards out, taking an early 7-0 lead. Beaver finished with 125 rushing yards on 30 carries.
Following Kmic's 95-yard run to give the Raiders a 21-7 third quarter lead
the fourth game changing play occurred. Whitewater drove to Mount
Union's 26 before Cameron Rose intercepted Justin Jacobs on the goal
line and the Raiders turned the Warhawks away again.
Four times Whitewater drove to the Mount Union 30-yard line but did not get points. The interception, a missed field goal and two unsuccessful fourth down attempts were the difference as the defense stepped up with a big play each time it was needed.
Mount Union marched 80 yards in 10 plays following the interception to push its advantage to 28-7 on Kmic's two-yard run. The third quarter ended with Whitewater facing its biggest deficit of the year.
But there was no quit in the Warhawks as they scored twice to cut the lead to 28-21. First Jacobs hit Jim Leszczynski for a 23-yard touchdown. Following a Mount Union punt, Jacobs hit Pete Schmitt from 15-yards out with 8:36 still to play. Jacobs finished 22 of 47 for 310 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
It was at this point that Mount Union began its championship march.
With a one-score lead, the Purple
Jacobs would later score on a one-yard run with two seconds remaining but Whitewater needed three plays to punch it in with no timeouts, using almost a minute on the game clock. Matt Kostelnik recovered the ensuing onside kick with one tick remaining and the Purple Raiders only had to run one play in victory formation to put the final touches on a championship year.
Kostelnik led the defense with 11 tackles, while Greg Brauer had two sacks
and Jesse Wells one. Mount Union finished with 439 in 63 plays (7.0
yards per play) while Whitewater had 438 yards in 86 plays (5.1 yards per
play). The Purple Raiders converted five of 11 third down
opportunities and scored in all three trips inside the redzone, while the
Warhawks made five of 15 third down tries and scored on three of five
redzone opportunities. Mount Union broke numerous team records in 2005, including most offensive yards (7,800), passing attempts (429), pass completions (294), passing yards (4,227), rushing attempts (654) and first downs (374). The NCAA does not recognize playoff statistics towards season totals prior to the 2002 season so any marks set before that year only include the ten game regular season schedule. The win is Mount Union's eighth in nine Stagg Bowls apperances. The eight national championships by the Purple Raiders are the most at any level in the history of college football.
