Purple Raiders open with win for 18th consecutive season Mount Union opened its 2005 season with a 33-7 victory over visiting Washington (MO) in front of 3,236 fans at Mount Union Stadium. The Purple Raiders entered the contest champions of the Ohio Athletic Conference for 13 consecutive years, while the Bears claimed the University Athletic Association four straight seasons. Mount Union's defense was dominant from the start, allowing only three Washington first downs in the first half, while forcing a three and out on four of the Bears six possessions of the half. Despite the defensive effort, and a 238 to 60 advantage in yards gained, the Purple & White led only 12-0 at the break due to turnovers and limited success on third down opportunities. Mount Union fumbled the opening kickoff after a nice return to midfield, and after forcing a three and out from Washington, then drove 66 yards on its first possession to the Washington 14 before Evan Mayer intercepted a Mike Jorris pass on the two ending the threat. The Raiders got on the board with 3:23 remaining in the first quarter when Kelechi Ibeh capped a seven-play, 48-yard drive by scampering eight yards for the first touchdown of the season. Mike Zimmerman's extra point hit the right upright and bounced back making it 6-0 after the first period. Zimmerman, a sophomore from Archbold, Ohio, transferred to Mount Union College this past summer after spending his freshman year at the University of Charleston where he received First-Team All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors in 2004 for connecting on all 32 of his PAT tries and making 10 of 13 field goal attempts with a long of 39 yards. He accounted for all the second quarter scoring, booting field goals of 40 and 22 yards. The 40-yard kick became the longest of his collegiate career and looked like it could have been good from 50 yards. The second kick came in the final seconds of the half. Mount Union limited Washington to nine rushing yards in the first half and one pass play covering 28 yards accounted for almost half of the Bears 60 yards at the break. The Raiders balanced attack of 90 rushing yards and 148 passing yards were slowed by converting only two of six third down conversion attempts in the half. It felt like the game should not have been as close as the 12-0 score flashed by the brilliant new scoreboard in the North endzone. Senior wide receiver Scott Casto ignited the Raiders in the third quarter, returning a Washington punt 34 yards to the Bears 38-yard line. Casto performed well with 168 all-purpose yards in the contest It took the Raiders four plays to hit pay dirt when Randy Mason hit Pierre Garcon from 21 yards out, making it 19-0 four minutes into the second half. Garcon is a sophomore from West Palm Beach, Florida, transferring to Mount Union College this summer after lighting up the scoreboard at Norwich University as a freshman in 2004. His numbers included 44 receptions for 1,017 yards (23.1 ypc) and 13 touchdowns. He finished 14th in the nation in Division III averaging 101.7 receiving yards per game. Mount Union threatened again when Ryan Fehl picked off Pat McCarthy near midfield and returned the ball to the Bears 31-yard line. The Purple & White moved to the six in six plays but Randy Mason was intercepted at the one by Tommy Bawden and returned 67 yards all the way to the Raider 21. It was the second redzone turnover in the game for Mount Union. Washington's drive stalled at the five after six plays and on fourth and goal, Nick Henry's pass intended for All-American Brad Duesing fell incomplete. A touchdown here would have made it 19-7 but it seemed the air went out of the visitors after coming up with no points on the drive. The Purple Raiders added two fourth quarter touchdowns when Jorris connected with Garcon from 17 yards out for the wideouts second touchdown of the game midway through the final stanza and then Mason hit Scott Campbell for a nine-yard touchdown with just under three minutes remaining in the game. Washington spoiled the shutout with in the final minute when McCarthy hit Ben Schaub from 10 yards out. The two-minute drive covered 80 yards and darn near doubled the Bears offensive yardage in the game as they finished with a total of 182 compared to Mount Union's 439 yard effort. Mount Union rotated quarterbacks during the game and they both played well. Jorris completed 18 of 22 passes for 193 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Mason finished 13 of 18 for 104 yards, two scores and one interception. Aaron Robinson carried the bal 16 times, picking up 85 of the Raiders 142 rushing yards in the contest. Mike Gibbons led the defense with a game high 11 tackles while Matt Rees and Fehl each picked off a pass. With the win, the Purple Raiders have won 105 consecutive regular season contests, and 122 of the last 125 games they have played overall. Mount Union will have a bye this upcoming Saturday before opening conference play on September 17th against John Carroll with a night contest at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. The Blue Streaks begin their season this Saturday at Hope.
