Mount Union 19 Rowan 7 by Ric Brienza |
Mount Union defeated Rowan 19-7 Saturday before 3,236 fans at Mount Union Stadium in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. The win advances the Purple Raiders to their ninth national championship contest in 13 years and the eighth in the last 10 seasons.
The semifinal victory came against a team in Rowan that Mount Union had beat in three of those championship games (1993, 96, 98). But the last meeting between the two teams produced a Prof win, 24-17 in overtime, at Mount Union Stadium in 1999. That loss broke a string of 54 straight wins by the Raiders, who would then go on to win another 55 in a row. 110 games, 109 wins, the only loss coming in overtime to Rowan.
This match-up had all the markings of a defensive battle and the two teams
did not disappoint. Rowan was characterized as a bend-but-don't-break
defense and that was its repertoire on Saturday. Four times Mount
Union drove inside the Prof's 30-yard line in the first half only to come
away with no points. Three of those drives ended when the Raiders
could not convert on fourth down and another ended on a blocked field goal
attempt.
In the meantime, Rowan did nothing offensively. The Profs did not pick up a first down until the second quarter and it came via a Mount Union penalty. They cracked the Mount Union side of the field just once the entire half, but after getting to the Raider 30 on that drive, lost 12 yards over the next three plays and had to punt
The Raiders finally dented the scoreboard three minutes into the second period when Mike Jorris found Nate Kmic all by himself in the endzone for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Mike Zimmerman's extra point made it 7-0. The score capped a five-play, 39-yard drive that was set up after a short Rowan punt into the wind from its own 20-yard line.
Kmic broke into the clear out of the backfield on the touchdown and was not picked up by a Rowan secondary that did a great job containing Mount Union's top two receivers all day.
Pierre Garcon and Scott Casto each had more than 1000 receiving yards
entering the contest but combined for just 55 yards on eight receptions
against Rowan. Brandon Boehm contributed 4 catches for 49 yards while
Anthony Antonucci had two receptions totally 20 yards. Scott Campbell
caught one pass
Mount Union doubled its lead on the very next possession when Kmic scampered in from seven yards out with five minutes remaining in the half. The drive covered 76 yards in 10 plays and was kept alive by a roughing the punter penalty on Rowan when it seemed the Profs had stopped the Raiders. Following the penalty Mount Union marched 57 yards in seven plays with two big plays along the way, an 18-yard reception by Campbell to the Rowan 39 and a 23-yard run by Kmic to the Prof's 16.
At halftime it was 14-0 and Mount Union had garnered 195 yards of total offense while Rowan had managed just 34 yards. There was no doubt many Prof fans were wondering what might be if Mike Orihel, one of the top ranked Division III quarterbacks in the nation, was not hurt and lost for the year in Rowan's fifth game.
Rowan's only score came late in the third quarter when Joe Rankin snuck in
on a quarterback keeper from the one. The score was set up on a
44-yard pass from Rankin to Phil Silva that the wideout took to
the one. It was a four-play, 49-yard drive that began after a 32-yard
Mount Union punt into the wind.
But Mount Union added five points in a dominant fourth quarter to hold on for the win. Zimmerman booted a 25-yard field goal midway through the period and the defense produced a safety when Buddy Wolf sacked Rankin in the endzone with six minutes to play.
After Rowan scored the Profs had the ball for less than three minutes over the final 16:30. Mount Union controlled the ball for more than 40 minutes in the game and outgained Rowan in total yards 322 to 176. The Raider defense held the Profs to minus one yard rushing on 27 attempts. Rowan finished just one of 13 on third down conversions and punted nine times in the game.
The Profs comback hopes ended with Robert McDavid's interception in the final minute. It was Mount Union's second pick on the day as Ryan Fehl recorded one in the first half on a play in which he was injured. Jorris was intercepted once and neither team lost a fumble.
Defensively, the Raiders were led by Mike Gibbons, who registered nine
tackles, breaking the Mount Union record for tackles in a season with 144.
The previous record of 140 was set by Jason Hall in 1998, With the win, the Purple Raiders will face Wis-Whitewater next week in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. The Warhawks advance with a 58-6 win over Wesley Saturday. The two teams have played twice before with Mount Union winning both games. The Raiders beat the Warhawks 44-21 in Wisconsin to open the 2002 season and 40-17 in the 2003 opener played in Alliance.
Mount Union enters the contest 13-1 while Whitewater brings a perfect 14-0 mark into the contest. The Purple Raiders will be playing for their eighth national title in 13 years while the Warhawks are looking for their first.
