Balanced offensive attack, bend but don't break defense stop Otterbein For the second consecutive week, Mount Union jumped out to a three touchdown lead in the first quarter and never looked back in defeating Otterbein 55-7 before 4,013 fans at Mount Union Stadium Saturday night. It was the Raiders 96th consecutive conference win, and the 107th straight regular season victory overall. Quarterback Mike Jorris came out strong, completing eight of 10 first quarter passes for 105 yards and a touchdown. The scoring strike went to Pierre Garcon, who caught five passes in the first period covering 73 yards. Kelechi Ibeh and Terrance Morring added scoring runs although Aaron Robinson led the ground game in that first stanza with 52 yards on just four carries. It was 20-0 entering the second quarter as one of Mike Zimmerman extra point attempts sailed wide. Despite the fact Otterbein showed it could come back late in the game by scoring two late touchdowns last week to upset Capital, you just felt the way Mount Union's defense has played all year there would be no rallying by the Cardinals this week. Aaron Robinson scored from one yard out late in the second period making it 27-0 at the break, marking the third straight game Mount Union did not allow a first half point. The Cardinals did attempt two long field goals in the half, but neither hit their mark. Otterbein was one dimensional as it could not run the ball in the first half, gaining only 27 rushing yards on 14 attempts. The Cardinals did show they could throw the ball as Paul Stelzer completed 13 of 21 passes for 118 yards and one interception, but not when it became third down as Otterbein was zero for six in that category at halftime. By the time Otterbein cracked the scoreboard in the final minute of the third quarter, Mount Union had increased its advantage to 41-0 on two more touchdown runs by Robinson. And 12 seconds after the Cardinals made it 41-7, Garcon electrified the Mount Union Stadium crowd with an 80-yard kickoff return down the home team's sideline for a touchdown. Garcon had quite a night finishing with 182 receiving yards on eight catches and two touchdowns. But he might be remembered most for the catch that didn't count when he somehow grabbed a 40-yard Jorris strike with one hand while being interfered with and falling to the turf. It seemed everyone in the stadium saw the remarkable catch except for the nearest official that was blocked by Otterbein's defender on the play and probably thought there was no way someone could make that kind of catch. ruling it incomplete but interference. Regardless, it was an amazing effort by the sophomore from West Palm Beach, Florida. The Raiders added a final touchdown in the fourth quarter as Morring scored for the second time on the night and third time this season, making the final 55-7. It marked the 27th straight victory for Mount Union over Otterbein. The Raiders finished with 571 total yards compared to 247 for the Cardinals. Jorris finished 16 of 25 for 277 yards and one touchdown. Robinson rushed for 102 yards on 17 carries and three scores. Garcon added 101 return yards to his 182 receiving output giving him 283 all-purpose yards in the contest. Defensively, Matt Rees recorded 12 tackles while Mike Gibbons added 10. Justen Stickley and Matt Kostelnik recorded interceptions, while Marcello D'Angellis forced and then recovered a fumble. Mount Union finished plus three in the turnover battle and is now plus seven on the season. The last time a Purple Raider team won the turnover battle but lost a regular season game was all the way back in 1990! Mount Union improves to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. Next week Capital pays a visit to Alliance with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium. The Crusaders blanked Heidelberg 66-0 Saturday in a tune up for the Raiders, and enter the contest 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Last year Mount Union defeated Capital 49-7 in Columbus, and have won 17 straight in the series dating back to the Crusaders last win in 1987. Overall, the Purple Raiders lead in the series 25-12.
