That is until Saturday when Ohio Northern defeated Mount Union 21-14 before 3,369 stunned fans at Mount Union Stadium. 110 regular season games, 99 conference match-ups, all wins between the two losses 11 years apart. An amazing feat that will likely not be equaled any time soon. Ohio Northern's win also stopped a string of 22 straight defeats to Mount Union dating back to the Polar Bears last win in 1984.
Second year Ohio Northern head coach Dean Paul was successful in his first
return trip to his Alma Mater as he is a 1990 graduate of Mount Union
College. Paul was a four-year letterman for Larry Kehres, being named
All-Conference in 1988 and 1990. He also served as a team captain
during his junior and senior seasons and ranks sixth all-time at Mount Union
with 2,013 career rushing yards. So its no surprise Paul wants his team to be able to run the ball. And that they did Saturday, compiling 217 rushing yards on 45 attempts. Entering the contest Mount Union was the number one rush defense in all of Division III, allowing just 44.3 rushing yards per game. It had allowed a total of just 266 rushing yards in the first six games this season. Running back R.J. Meadows was the main weapon in Northern's arsenal. The freshman from Hendersonville, TN rushed for 148 yards and scored all three of the Polar Bears touchdowns. His first two scores came on ONU's first two possessions as the Bears jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead.
Following a successful onside kick to begin the game, Northern drove 54 yards in nine plays to grab the lead when Meadows scored from three yards out. It marked just the second time this year Mount Union trailed.
The Raiders had a chance to tie the game on its first possession but
Northern's defense came up big on a fourth and three from the Polar Bear 24
as Mike Jorris' pass fell incomplete. Three plays later Meadow's
Mount Union finally got on the board in the second quarter when Justin Stickley blocked an Ohio Northern punt attempt and Matt Kostelnik picked up the loose ball and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown.
That didn't faze the Polar Bears though as they immediately drove 72 yards in 11 plays to regain a two touchdown advantage when Meadows scored for the third time.
The biggest play of the game may have come as time expired in the first half when Mount Union could not get in the endzone on four tries from the four-yard line. Aaron Robinson got one yard on first, second and third down, but on fourth and goal from the one was stopped for a yard loss by a blitzing Lenny Trusnik and Northern led 21-7 at the half.
Mount Union could not get on track in the third quarter as two of its three
possessions ended in a turnover. The Raiders lost the ball four times
in the game while the Bears did not commit a turnover. Mount
While the offense could not consistently move the ball, the defense did its job in the second half, limiting Ohio Northern to just 76 total yards while keeping the Raiders in the game. Five of the Polar Bears second half possessions ended in punts and the other two were unsuccessful fourth down ties where the Mount Union defense held.
The Raiders narrowed the gap to 21-14 with 2:24 remaining in the game when Jorris found a wide open Maxwell Smith on a fourth down and eight play from the Ohio Northern 35-yard line.
The Polar Bears recovered the ensuing onside kick but could only get nine yards on three plays and were forced into a fourth down situation with 53 seconds remaining. Paul went for the win in an attempt to pick up the first down but Mike Gibbons and Jesse Wells stopped Meadows for no gain and the offense took over the ball on its 45-yard line with just 48 seconds to play.
In the final four plays Jorris was sacked twice including on the game's
final play at midfield ending the
Mount Union actually finished with more yards than Ohio Northern, gaining 331 yards on 62 plays compared to the Bears 325 yards on 67 plays, but the difference was the four Raider turnovers to none for Northern. The Polar Bears also controlled the ball for 36:35 compared to just 23:25 for Mount Union. The Purple Raiders fall into a three way tie for first place with Ohio Northern and John Carroll as each are now 6-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Next week Baldwin-Wallace visits Mount Union Stadium for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. The Yellow Jackets were stung by Capital 34-0 Saturday and enter the contest 3-4 overall, 2-4 in the OAC. The all-time series record is all tied up at 21 wins apiece with one tie. Many teams have come close. John Carroll
numerous times, Baldwin-Wallace on occasion, even Ohio Northern has made
Mount Union sweat over the past decade. But none were able to
put it all together for 60 minutes and leave the field as victors over the
Purple Raiders in a regular season game since Baldwin-Wallace turned the
trick on October 15, 1994 by the final of 23-10 in Alliance.
