The win, coupled with John Carroll's 19-7 loss to Capital, secures at least a share of the Ohio Athletic Conference championship for the Purple Raiders for the 14th consecutive season. Mike Jorris completed 25 of 30 passes for 370 yards and two touchdowns. The junior signal caller completed passes to nine different receivers, including a game high nine to Scott Casto for a 144 yards and one touchdown. Anthony Antonucci caught seven passes for 114 yards.
Meanwhile, Muskingum and its option attack completed just one pass in the
game, for minus one yards. Mount Union scored twice within a minute late in the first period and never looked back. Following a five-yard touchdown run by Kelechi Ibeh, Muskingum fumbled on its second play from scrimmage. The ball was picked up by Matt Kostelnik and returned 25 yards for the defense's first touchdown of the season. It was Kostelnik's second score though, as he also returned a blocked punt back for a touchdown against Ohio Northern. Mount Union looked crisp on offense, scoring on each of its six first half possessions, including a 10-play, 70-yard drive that culminated in a 17-yard field goal by Mike Zimmerman on the initial drive of the game. That drive stalled on the three-yard line with a fourth and one, and was the only possession not to produce seven points in the first two quarters.
Nate Kmic scored twice in the second quarter, on runs of five and 10 yards,
and Jorris hit Casto from 53 Mount Union added a third quarter score when Jorris hit Ibeh from 17 yards out, capping a six-play, 72-yard drive. The senior running back bulled into the endzone four his sixth touchdown of the season. Muskingum threatened to score only twice in the game but came up short on fourth down tries on both attempts as Mount Union posted its second shutout of the season. Defensively, the Raiders were led by a balanced attack as Greg Brauer, Marcello D'Angellis, Mike Gibbons and Buddy Wolf each produced seven tackles, and Robert McDavid added six.
The Purple & White finished with 172 rushing yards and 386 passing yards for
a total of 558. The Mount Union improved to 8-1 with the win, 7-1 in conference play. The Purple Raiders travel to Heidelberg for the regular season finale next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Frost-Kalnow Stadium. Heidelberg enters the contest 0-9 on the season and has lost 25 straight games dating back to a win over Marietta in week four of the 2003 season.
