There was a strong wind blowing out of the south all afternoon. Mount St. Joseph won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. Mount Union took the ball and the Lions took the wind. If not for the hard work of the Raider defense, keeping Mount St. Joseph out of the endzone despite seeing the visitors start three of four first quarter possessions on its side of the field, this might have been a much different game. As things turned out, Mount Union's defense limited Mount St. Joseph to just two field goals in that initial period and its offense produced one huge play. Third and eight . Ball on the
eight. Midway through the first quarter. The way the wind was
blowing a But that never happened. Because fighting the wind as well as the opponent, with its defense as dominant as ever, all the offense had to do was make one play in the first stanza. And what a play it was. Jorris back to throw. He heaves it as far as the wind will allow. There's no way a streaking Pierre Garcon will catch this one. Wait, its on his finger tips. He's got it at midfield. He's gone! 92 yards later Mount Union took a lead it would never relinquish. Mike Zimmerman's extra point made it 7-3, the first quarter ended 7-6, and it was all the points the Purple Raiders would need in the game. Mount Union's
rush defense allowed one yard in the entire contest. One yard.
On 34 plays. Mount St. Joseph garnered just 58 yards on 51 plays total
on the afternoon. And the first quarter was the Lions best. Six
points, 32 yards. They would get just zero and 19 the rest of the way.
Their points came on drives of 28 and 15 yards on the heels of great field
possession. The defense played a whale of a game. Mount Union scored three second quarter touchdowns to grab a comfortable 28-6 halftime lead. At the break the Raiders had 354 yards of offense to just 19 for Mount St. Joseph. Nate Kmic had already run for 123 yards, Jorris had thrown for 210 and Garcon had 123 receiving yards. And the defense allowed only 19 yards on 28 first half plays, limiting the Lions to just one third down conversion in eight attempts. The Mount Union defense allowed an average of just a touchdown a game during the regular season and they were even better in the first round of the playoffs. The Raiders are now riding a streak of 18 straight quarters in which they have not allowed a touchdown. Meanwhile the
Purple & White offense put together 42 unanswered points over the final
three quarters to jaunt to the 49-6 win. Kmic scored three times, on
runs of two, 11 and one yards. He finished with a career high 157
yards on 25 attempts. By the way, he is a freshman. Scott Casto
caught a 48-yard touchdown pass and finished with 61 yards on five
receptions. He also fell on a fumble for a touchdown in the third
quarter, giving Mount Union a 35-6 lead heading into the fourth period. The Raiders final score came on a nine-yard pass from Randy Mason to Maxwell Smith long after half of the 2,576 fans at Mount Union Stadium had headed for the exits. Mike Gibbons again led the way defensively, with nine tackles, three for loss, and one and a half sacks. Greg Brauer finished with six tackles and accounted for two and a half of the teams six sacks on the day. Mount Union played without the services of starting strong safety Ken Whitfield. The senior tore his patellar tendon in the season finale at Heidelberg and is lost for the remainder of the season. His on the field leadership will be missed as Mount Union tries to return to Salem, Virginia and the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. Overall, Mount Union finished with 565 yards of offense, 321 on the ground and 244 through the air. Jorris finished 12 of 19 for 225 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Raiders converted on 10 of 16 third down attempts while limiting Mount St. Joseph to just 3 of 15.
The Purple & White will face Augustana (IL) next Saturday at Mount Union Stadium. The Vikings defeated Lakeland 49-22 Saturday to advance to the second round match-up in Alliance. This will be the fifth meeting between these two schools, all coming in playoff action. Augie won the first two contests in 1985 and 1986 during their stretch of four straight national titles, while Mount Union prevailed in 1999 and in 2001. That last meeting came in the second round four years ago with the Raiders prevailing 32-7. Both teams enter the contest 10-1 this year with kickoff set for 12:00 noon. Box ScoreBox Score (Final)
