Purple Raiders reach milestone win in style Mount Union became only the fourth Division III football program to win 600 games with a 70-0 rout of Ohio Athletic Conference rival John Carroll under the lights Saturday night before 3,650 fans at Shula Stadium in University Heights. The Purple Raiders join Wittenberg, Washington & Jefferson and Widener in the 600 Win Club. Both the Raiders and the Blue Streaks entered the contest with 1-0 records and given the history of close games when Mount Union travels to John Carroll, this game was expected to be a real shoot-out. Everyone in the Mount family remembers the triple overtime classic that was played in 1999 and the clutch game winning drive in the final minute in 2001, but the problem for the Blue Streaks this time around was that they forgot to bring their bullets. With Mike Jorris starting at quarterback, the Purple & White wasted little time denting the scoreboard as Jorris hit Scott Casto with a 64-yard touchdown pass only 1:56 into the contest for a 7-0 lead. This quick strike was a precursor of things to come as Jorris wrote his name into the Mount Union record books as officially becoming the first Raider quarterback to toss seven touchdown passes in one game. The old-timers may remember that Jim Ballard threw eight touchdown passes in the 1993 semi-final playoff win over St. John's (MN), but until recently the NCAA did not recognize post-season games in their official stats, therefore Ballard's performance is not an official NCAA statistic. Mount Union scored the first six times it had the ball and only a fumble on the Streaks 10-yard line late in the first half prevented it from being seven for seven. The Raiders followed that up with four more touchdowns following the break, scoring 21 points in each of the first three quarters and seven in the fourth period. As dominant as the offense was, converting 11 of 15 third down attempts and one of one fourth down tries, the defense was just as impressive. John Carroll really only threatened to score twice, both times coming in the second quarter. The first threat ended when Matt Kostelnik intercepted a Steve Spence pass at the Raider 18. It was one of six Mount Union interceptions in the game. Ross Watson and Cameron Rose recorded two picks each, while Mike Gibbons added one as well. John Carroll's last serious scoring threat came in the final moments of the first half when it had three chances from the Raider two-yard line. But after a rush for no gain and two incomplete passes, the first half ended and so did the Blue Streaks chance of pointing points on the board. The Purple & White finished with 687 total yards in the contest while limiting the Blue & Gold to 227. Jorris completed 24 of 27 passes for 421 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions. Casto caught 10 passes for 238 yards and three scores and Aaron Robinson added 50 rushing yards on 13 carries and one score. Mike Gibbons led the defensive effort with nine tackles. Mount Union returns home next week to entertain Otterbein in a rare night contest at Mount Union Stadium. The Cardinals are coming off of a huge upset win over the then 12th ranked Capital Crusaders 17-14. Each team enters the contest 2-0 (1-0) with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. Last year Mount Union defeated Otterbein 41-10 in Westerville, and have won 26 straight in the series. Larry Kehres has never lost to the Cardinals as the Raiders lead in the series 33-4, with their last loss coming in 1977.
