At halftime the Purple Raiders led 43-0 and their last four scores came on one-play drives. Nate Kmic then raced 34 yards for a touchdown on the first offensive play in the third quarter marking a fifth straight one-play drive and a third straight touchdown on an offensive snap from scrimmage. It's the second time this season Mount Union scored on three successive offensive plays. The first time came on the first three offensive plays for scrimmage of the fourth quarter against Capital.
The scoring blitz of one-play drives Saturday started late in the first quarter when Mike Jorris found Scott Casto for a 52-yard touchdown pass. Jorris then connected with Pierre Garcon on successive scores in the second quarter, the first from 23 yards out and the second a 30-yard strike. It was the first action for Garcon in a number of weeks after he suffered a stress fracture to his lower leg midway through the season.
Casto scored the final touchdown of the first half on a six-yard pass from Jorris putting the Raiders up 43-0 at halftime. The senior from Green High School finished with 112 receiving yards on 12 catches and two scores and added a third touchdown on an 87-yard punt return in the first quarter. It was his first punt return for a score this season. He finished with 202 all purpose yards in just one half of play.
Each starter was pulled at intermission, but most had a full games worth of stats anyway. Jorris completed 12 of 17 passes for 215 yards and four touchdowns in just two quarters of play. Garcon had two catches, both for scores, totaling 53 yards.
Aaron Robinson had eight first half carries for 58 yards and scored the game's first touchdown on the initial drive of the contest. The 11-yard run capped an eight-play, 74-yard drive that ended just three minutes into the contest.
Kmic's second score came on a 33-yard run midway through the third period and finished a seven-play, 71-yard march. The freshmen had just two carries but scored on both, totaling 67 rushing yards in the process. Justin Wray led the team in scoring with 103 yards on seven carries and took knee on the one-yard line in the fourth quarter or he would have added a touchdown as well.
Mount Union added six fourth quarter points on a pair of field goals, a 19 yarder from Mike Zimmerman and one from 25 yards out by Dan Diemert. The Raiders also scored two first quarter points on a safety when a bad snap on a Heidelberg punt attempt sailed over Jimmy May's head and out of the back of the endzone.
Defensively, Mount Union created four turnovers, including two interceptions
by Ross Watson, giving him a conference leading nine on the season.
Matt Kostelnik recorded an interception on the goal line to stop
Heidelberg's only scoring threat of the afternoon, and also blocked a punt in the contest.
Mount Union finished with 661 yards while limiting Heidelberg to just 170. It's the sixth time in 10 games the Raiders held their opponent to under 200 total yards. The Purple & White finished the regular season not allowing a touchdown in 14 straight quarters and only allowed three points over that span, with two shutouts. With the win, the Purple Raiders finish the regular season 9-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
Mount Union automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs by virtue of winning the OAC and will host Mount St. Joseph in a first round meeting at Mount Union Stadium Saturday with kickoff set for 12:00 Noon. The Lions enter the contest 9-1 and qualified for the playoffs as champions of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
