Mike Jorris found Anthony Antonucci for a two-yard touchdown pass 3:41 to play and
Mount Union's defense held Capital without a first down on four plays
following the kickoff as the Purple Raiders defeated
Antonucci's score capped an eight-play, 46-yard drive that began with seven minutes remaining following a Capital touchdown that gave the visitor's a 31-27 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Robert McDavid returned the ensuring kickoff 45 yards to the Capital 46 setting up the game winning drive.
Mount Union has now beat its conference rival 19 straight times dating back to 1987, but none of the games have been as well played or had as much on the line as this one did. There were six lead changes and neither team led by more than one score in the entire contest. It was tied 17-17 at halftime and 24-24 after three periods before the Purple & White won the fourth quarter 10-7 to pull out the victory.
There were numerous big plays in the game, but none bigger than Pierre
Garcon's 88-yard touchdown catch and run late in the first quarter.
That play came immediately after Capital had taken its first lead and gave
Mount Union a 10-7 advantage after the first stanza.
Garcon finished with season high 11 receptions for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Jorris completed 23 of 32 passes for 315 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had seven rushes for 30 yards and was not sacked in the contest.
Capital had its share of big plays as well. Probably its biggest offensively came when Rocky Pentello hooked up with Lewis Howes on a 70-yard score late in the first half to give the Crusaders a 17-10 lead. That play capped a four-play, 96-yard march. Mount Union subsequently drove 75 yards in 11 plays in just over two minutes to knot the score before the half when Jorris and Garcon connected again, this time from three yards out.
Pentello had a fine game, completing 18 of 28 passes for 312 yards, four
touchdowns and one interception. Howes had a career afternoon,
catching 12 passes for 245 yards and three scores. Kive Kraft opened
the scoring for Capital with an 11-yard touchdown reception 10 minutes into
the game, giving the Crusaders a 7-3 lead at the time.
But the difference in the contest was the running game. Mount Union had one and Capital did not. Raider freshman Nate Kmic led all rushers with 177 yards on 38 carries and one touchdown. That score came midway though the third quarter and tied the game at 24 following Howes second touchdown reception. Kmic had 124 more rushing yards than Capital managed as a team. The Crusaders only allowed two 100-yard rushers all season, Kmic on Saturday and Aaron Robinson's 109 yards in the first meeting won by Mount Union 42-24 on October 1st. Kmic now has 695 yards and eight touchdowns in the Raiders three playoff games.
Colin O'Reilly had 36 yards on 10 carries for Capital, while Jeremy Mulkey added 24 yards on nine rushes. Capital's longest run in the game came on an end-around by Kyle Rankin that went for nine yards. By comparison, Kmic had a 38 yard jaunt for Mount Union.
Along with opening up holes for Kmic, Mount Union's offensive line gave
Jorris time to throw all afternoon. The junior was not sacked, while
Pentello was brought down for loss four times. And on its final
Defensively, Gibbons led the way with 11 tackles. Robert McDavid recorded the only interception in the game and Greg Brauer recovered a fumble. The Purple Raiders sacked Pentello four times while Jorris was not sacked in the contest. Buddy Wolf had two sacks, while Brauer and Justen Stickley each registered one.
Mount Union finished with 522 yards, 207 on the ground and 315 through the air. Capital garnered 365 total yards, 312 through the air and just 53 on the ground. The Raiders converted 11 of 19 third down opportunities while the Crusaders made five of 13. The Purple & White had a 10 minute advantage in time of possession and finished with 21 first downs to 16 for Capital.

will host Rowan next week in semifinal playoff action. It is the
11th straight
The Profs advance to next Saturday's game by defeating Delaware Valley 27-21 on Saturday. Mount Union is 3-1 all time against Rowan with each win coming in the championship game during the 1993, 1996 and 1998 seasons. The loss came in overtime in the last meeting by the final of 24-17 in the semifinal round of the 1999 playoffs. That game was played in Alliance and ended the Purple & White's then record 54-game win streak. Mount Union immediately began a 55-game consecutive victory streak at the beginning of the 2000 season so the setback to Rowan was Mount Union's only loss in 110 games played.
Kickoff from Mount Union Stadium on Saturday is set for 12:00 noon. The winner advances to play in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl the following week against the winner of the Wesley at Wis-Whitewater game. Box ScoreBox Score (Final)
