Dominant defense, big-play offense prove difference in win over Capital Every year it seems like Mount Union's football team plays week in and week out in games that the outcome is not in doubt by halftime. Then, within this series of games, one emerges where the Purple Raiders have their backs up against the wall and they are pushed to the limit. Last year it was Ohio Northern, other years it has been John Carroll or Baldwin-Wallace. Not since 1994 has Mount Union been unable to withstand this challenge and came through victorious. Saturday was no different as touchdowns on three consecutive offensive plays in the first 2:25 of the fourth quarter turned a 17-14 Capital lead into a 42-24 Mount Union victory. It was the Purple Raiders 108th consecutive regular season win. 5,122 fans at Mount Union Stadium watched as Capital scored ten unanswered third quarter points to taker a three-point lead. Matt Spitz kicked a 26-yard field goal on the opening drive of the second half, closing to within 14-10, then Rocky Pentello scored from three-yards out, when his tail back, Collin O'Reilly, seemingly stopped for a two-yard loss, tossed the ball back to his quarterback, who waltzed untouched into the endzone. That gave Capital a 17-14 lead and marked the first time this season Mount Union trailed at any point in a game. Meanwhile Mount Union was unable to do anything with the ball. Three third quarter possessions ended in two fumbles and one punt. Maybe the biggest defensive play of the game came late in the third period as Capital faced a third and one from Mount Union's 49 following a turnover. A first down here and the Crusaders enter the final quarter with the lead and the ball on Mount Union's side of the field. But Mike Gibbons stopped O'Reilly for no gain forcing a Crusaders punt. Gibbons finished with a game high 11 tackles and has a team leading 41 through the first four games. As the fourth quarter began, the Raiders faced a third and seven from their own 17-yard line. The next three snaps of the ball for Mount Union produced 21 points, the first time in the history of Mount Union football that the team scored a touchdown on three consecutive offense plays. More importantly on Saturday, it turned a 17-14 deficit into a 35-14 lead. First Mike Jorris connected with a streaking Pierre Garcon down the home team sideline for an 83-yard touchdown pass, retaking the lead with 14:48 to play. Following a Cameron Rose interception, Kelechi Ibeh scampered 49 yards on the first play, making it 28-17 with 13:45 left. Then, after Scott Casto's 32-yard punt return to the Capital 25, Aaron Robinson went the distance, increasing the advantage to 35-17 with 12:35 remaining in the game. Mount Union added one more score with 3:30 remaining when Robinson scored his third touchdown of the day before Capital added one themselves in the final minute of the contest. After a scoreless first quarter the Purple & White got on the board first when Robinson scored from a yard out early in the second stanza. Capital evened the game on a receiver option pass as Chad Stencil took a pitch from Pentello and hit Kive Kraft on a 19-yard pass play. Mount Union took a halftime lead when Jorris found a speeding Garcon behind the Capital defense and found him in stride down the middle of the field for a 77-yard touchdown pass and run. The Raiders actually had a chance to add to their lead late in the half but could not get into the endzone on two tries from the one in the final minute before intermission. Mount Union outgained Capital 477 yards to 275 in the game, averaging 7.2 yards per play to 3.4 for the Crusaders. Jorris connected on 16 of 26 passes for 301 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Garcon caught nine passes for 214 yards and two scores, while Robinson led the ground attack with 109 yards on 22 carries and three scores. Defensively, Gibbons and Matt Kostelnik each recorded 11 tackles, while Ross Watson intercepted three passes and now has six on the season. Cameron Rose also had a pick and has three on the year. Mount Union recorded three sacks, two by Buddy Wolf and one from Greg Brauer. The Purple Raiders move to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win. Mount Union travels to Wilmington next Saturday. The Quakers will enter the contest 2-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play following its 28-14 victory over Heidelberg. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. from Williams Stadium. Last year, Mount Union defeated Wilmington 49-7, and has dominated the series that dates back to 1968, winning the first seven games by an average final score of 54-3. The closest game in the series came in 2000 when the Raiders won 42-7 at Mount Union Stadium.
