Mount Union 17 |
The win allows Mount Union to keep pace with John Carroll (7-1 overall, 6-1 OAC) a top the Ohio Athletic Conference standings. The Purple Raiders entered the day in a three-way tie with Ohio Northern and John Carroll but Northern suffered a crushing 16-14 home loss to Capital on a 40-yard field goal with 37 seconds to play that puts the Polar Bears one game behind the front running Raiders and Blue Streaks with only two games to play. John Carroll kept pace with an impressive 32-6 win over a tough Otterbein squad. For the second week in a row, Mount
Union struggled offensively in the first half with its only score coming on
a 21-yard Mike Zimmerman field goal at the 8:36 mark of the second quarter.
The Raiders missed a scoring opportunity on their third possession when
Zimmerman's 34-yard field goal attempt bounced off the right upright.
After lighting up the scoreboard in the first quarter of their first six games of the season, the last two first quarters have seen the Mount offense shutout. Luckily the Raider defense was up to the task as the Jackets managed only a second quarter field goal as well. At the half, Mount Union had only 131 yards of total offense and Baldwin-Wallace just 91 yards. The third quarter started with the defense stuffing the Jackets first possession after gaining only one yard and the offense finally caught a spark. Mount's first possession began at its own 45-yard line and covered 55 yards to paydirt in eight consecutive rushing plays. The final six yards by Nate Kmic. which is Kmic's second rushing touchdown in the young freshman's career. Zimmerman's PAT was good and Mount Union had regained the lead for good midway through third quarter. Baldwin
Wallace's best drive of the game followed the Kmic touchdown as the Jackets
drove 59 yards in 10 plays but Brandon Hedges was stuffed for no gain by
Justen Stickley and Jesse Wells on a fourth and one play at the Raider
26-yard line. Following the Stickley and Wells stop, Mount Union opened up some breathing room by marching 74 yards on seven plays, capped by a perfectly thrown 42-yard bomb from Mike Jorris to a streaking Scott Casto. Zimmerman's PAT determined the final 17-3 score. Baldwin Wallace threatened to score only once more in the game after driving to Mount's seven-yard line in the final three minutes before the defense stiffened and stopped the Jackets on downs. Overall offensively, Mount Union was led on the ground once again by Aaron Robinson's sixth consecutive 100+ yard rushing performance (103 yards on 23 carries). Scott Casto was the leading receiver in the game with 73 yards on three catches and one score. While much
attention has been paid to the Raider's amazing 110 game regular season
winning streak (99 straight conference wins) coming to an end last week at
the hands of Ohio Northern, another significant streak came to an end today
as well. With the loss, Baldwin Wallace's 38-year consecutive winning
seasons streak has been snapped as the Jackets currently sit at 3-5 on the
season. Not only has B-W been guaranteed of a non-winning season, they
could very well finish with a very rare losing season as the Jackets have to
finish their season against arch-rival John Carroll who currently sits a top
the OAC Mount Union returns to action next Saturday at Muskingum with a 1:30 start time against the 2-6 (2-5 OAC) Fighting Muskies with their goal of an OAC Championship and NCAA Playoff birth still very much in reach. With wins over the Muskies and against Heidelberg in Week 10, the Raiders will be assured of no worse than a share of their 14th consecutive OAC Championship and a return trip to the NCAA Playoffs.
