Mount Union freshman running back Nate Kmic rushed for a school record 361
yards on 37 carries and scored four touchdowns as the Purple Raiders defeated Augustana (IL) 44-7
Saturday in front of 2,637 fans at Mount Union Stadium in the second round
of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Kmic scored on runs of 20, 19, 31 and 34 yards and averaged 9.8 yards per carry in the contest. In two playoff games he has rushed for 518 yards and seven touchdowns. He got the start after First-Team All-Conference junior running back Aaron Robinson was unable to practice all week due to a hamstring injury and did not play in the game.
The 361-yard rushing performance breaks the school record set in 1970 by Mike DeBlasi of 269 yards rushing in a 42-6 win at John Carroll. It also eclipsed the "unofficial" mark set by Chuck Moore during the 2001 playoffs when he ran for 346 yards in a 49-21 win over Wittenberg in the quarterfinals. The NCAA does not recognize playoff stats in the official season stats prior to the 2002 season.
Mount Union did everything it had to do to win this game. The Raiders jumped out to an early lead and never trailed, forcing the Vikings into mistakes and winning the turnover battle. The Purple & White created three Augie turnovers, including the first career interception on the goalline by sophomore Nick Barren, who is starting in the place of injured senior Ken Whitfield at strong safety.
That pick by Barren ended a 71-yard march by Augie on their first possession. They had converted two fourth and one tries on the drive and seemed poised to either tie the game at six or take a 7-6 lead.
Mount Union scored on the initial drive of the game when Kmic scored from 20 yards out. It capped a nine-play, 71-yard drive that took 4:11 off the clock. Mike Zimmerman's extra point attempt sailed wide right making it 6-0.
The Purple & White finished plus two in turnover ratio and were four of four in redzone scoring chances while limiting Augustana to just one score in three trips into the redzone.
Mount Union made it 13-0 early in the second quarter when Mike Jorris found Pierre Garcon on a bubble screen the wideout took 40 yards for a touchdown. That capped an eight-play, 77-yard march that took just 2:57 to complete.
The key series in the game probably occurred late in the first half after
Greg Cozzi scored on a two-yard run for the Vikings cutting the Raiders lead
to 13-7 with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter. After playing from
behind for all of the first half the Vikings were set to get to second half
kickoff with the chance to grab
But Scott Campbell returned the kickoff following Augie's touchdown 28 yards to the Vikings 45-yard line, setting Mount Union up in great field position to regain a two score lead. Augustana choose to kick to an up man rather than deep and Campbell made them pay with a fine return.
It took Mount Union five plays and 1:09 to go 45 yards and regain the two score advantage when Kmic scampered 19 yards for his second score the the day.
After Augustana fumbled on the first play of the third quarter, Mount Union pushed the lead to 27-7 in just two plays when Kmic scored from 31 yards out.
The two scores, the first in the final minute of the first half,
the second in the first minute of the second half, pushed the Raiders lead
from 13-7 to 27-7 and really took the air out of Augustana. Its ball
control offense is not suited for coming back from that far down and the
Vikings were unable to do so on this day. They only attempted two passes in
the game with no completions and one interception.
Mount Union scored the final 31 points in the game and the 37-point margin of victory is the most lopsided outcome of the five games played between the two teams. The Raiders have won three straight against Augustana after dropping the first two. All five contests have been playoff match-ups.
Jorris finished eight of 10 passing for 112 yards and one touchdown. Garcon led all receivers with three receptions for 60 yards. Justin Wray added the final score on a five-yard run with five minutes left, and Mike Zimmerman booted a 26-yard field goal to account for the scoring.
Defensively, Mike Gibbons had a game high 18 tackles, the most by a Raider in any game this year. The senior linebacker now has a team high 124 tackles on the season. Jesse Wells finished with 13 tackles, while Sam Vucelich added 11 and Nick Barren 10. Barren also recovered a fumble to go along with his interception. Greg Brauer recovered the other fumble, while Buddy Wolf forced both fumbles.
Mount Union finished with 536 yards, 424 on the ground and 112 through the
air. Augustana garnered 312 total yards, all of which came on the
ground. The Purple Raiders averaged 8.8 yards per play,
With the win, Mount Union will host Capital next week in quarterfinal playoff action. It is the 14th straight year the Purple Raiders advance to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.
The Crusaders advance to next Saturday's game by defeating Wabash 14-11 on Saturday. In week four this year, Mount Union defeated Capital 42-24 after trailing 17-14 entering the final quarter. The Raiders scored on each of its first three offensive plays in the final period in route to winning for the 18th straight time vs. its conference rival. You can read more about that game here.
