First, Jason Cavell raced 61 yards on a punt return to make it 14-0 with 4:58 to play in the first quarter. It was the senior wide receiver's third career punt return for a touchdown. The second big special teams play came when Wilmington lined up to attempt a 47-yard field goal with 1.9 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Wade Kirk broke through to block the kick, which was deflected back into Wilmington territory. As the ball bounced along the visitor's sidelines, there was a scramble for recovery. The ball was first touched by a Quaker before bouncing right into the lap of Shaun Spisak, who returned it the final 16-yards for his first career Mount Union touchdown.
That score, with no time left in the first half, sent the Purple & White into the locker room with a 42-0 advantage. At the intermission, Mount Union had totaled 303 yards, while limiting Wilmington to just 55, including minus four yards rushing in the first half. The third special teams score ended Mount Union's shutout bid. With 10:08 remaining in the third quarter Marque Jones returned a kickoff 93 yards to put Wilmington on the board. That touchdown came just 13 seconds after Aaron Robinson's 15-yard run to paydirt, giving the home team a 49-0 advantage. It capped a three-play, 11-yard drive that was set up by Scott Casto's 25-yard punt return. The Raiders opened the scoring 8:27 into the game when Zac Bruney connected with Casto on a five-yard scoring strike. It was a seven-play, 63-yard drive, taking just 2:49 off the clock.
Casto had two grabs for ten yards in the game while Bruney completed 17 of 24 passes for 229 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He matched a personal best with the four touchdown passes, and completed passes to eight different receivers. Jeff Strauch caught Bruney's second touchdown toss. It came following a four-play, 50-yard drive, with 10:31 remaining in the second, making it 21-0. Strauch had two rushes for 22 yards and two catches for 10 yards in the game. Robinson's first career touchdown reception came with 5:08 to play in the half, pushing the score to 28-0. It covered 14 yards, following a three-play, 45 yard drive. Robinson finished with 37 yards on seven carries and the one reception. Mount Union's
longest drive of the half made it 35-0 with :58 seconds to play. The
drive covered 65 yards and took seven plays before Rick Ciccone caught
Bruney's 11-yard pass for a score. Ciconne had 41 rushing yards on
seven attempts and 53 receiving yards on four catches to lead the Raiders in
both categories. Mount Union didn't have to move the football far to score because each of Wilmington's first seven possessions ended in punts and they didn't pick up a first down until over 20 minutes had been played. The Quakers final drive of the first half, which began on their own 33 with :56 remaining, accounted for 63% of their first half yardage and half of their first downs. The teams played to a scoreless fourth quarter. The Purple Raiders finished with 411 yards to 112 for Wilmington. Mount Union averaged 6.4 yards per play, while limiting the Quakers to just 1.7. Mount Union's defense has scored four touchdowns on the season, while the special teams have now accounted for three scores. The Raiders
added seven more sacks in the contest and now have a conference leading 30
through five games. None of the three Raider quarterbacks that played
in the game were sacked. Indvidually, Spisak led the team with seven tackles,
while Justen Stickley added five. The victory was Mount Union's 99th straight regular season victory, and the 89th win in a row against Ohio Athletic Conference competition. The Purple & White have now won 114 of the last 116 games they've played. The Purple Raiders improve to 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. Next week Marietta comes to Alliance. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium. The Pioneers enter the contest 3-2 overall and 2-2 in conference pay. Last year Mount Union blanked Marietta 55-0 in Marietta, and have won 24 straight in the series dating back to the Pioneers last win in 1977. Overall, the Purple Raiders lead in the series 33-8-1.
