The nation's second ranked defense limited the Thunder, ranked fourth in the nation offensively, to almost 200 yards less than their season average, and kept Wheaton out of the endzone by creating five turnovers in the contest. The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin co-champions had scored at least two touchdowns in each game and a total of 62 this season, but were held to just two field goals by Mount Union. The Raiders ran for 399 yards as a team, averaging 8.7 yards per rush. Both numbers were better than twice the average Wheaton had allowed in its first 11 games. Two big rushing
plays
in the game were a 36-yard dash by Zac Bruney with :37 remaining in the first half to
give the Purple & White a two touchdown lead, and an 81-yard scamper by Jeff
Strauch with 5:44 to play to push the advantage to three scores and pretty much put the
game away. Bruney's touchdown capped a four-play, 78-yard drive that took just 36 seconds and consisted of two runs by Bruney, a 22 yarder and the 36-yard touchdown, book ended around an 11-yard pass to Rick Ciccone and a nine-yard toss to Strauch. The drive was set up by Jesse Clum's first interception of the game that ended a potential game tying drive by Wheaton late in the second quarter at the Mount Union 22. Clum later picked off a second pass that ended Wheaton's first drive of the third quarter on the Purple Raiders 19. The senior free safety now has a team leading six interceptions on the year. Strauch's 81-yard touchdown run to ice the game followed a defensive stand on the 19-yard line with under six minutes to play. Wheaton had moved 45 yards in seven plays and faced a fourth and nine when Frank Andrews' pass intended for Brad Musso fell incomplete. Had Wheaton found the endzone at that point it would have been a seven point game with five minutes to play. Instead Strauch
took a handoff on the next play, followed a Jeff Goodwill block right up the
middle and Wheaton's Andrew Day kicked field goals on each of the Thunder's first two drives to account for all the visitor's scoring on the afternoon as they would be held scoreless in their next eight possessions. The first field goal gave the Thunder a 3-0 lead with 5:40 to play in the first quarter, while the second tied the game at six with 8:27 to go in the half. Mount Union got on the board on its second possession, a 15-play, 69-yard march culminated by a 17-yard touchdown run by Kelechi Ibeh. It was the junior running back's third touchdown of the year as he finished with 18 yards on three carries . Chad Teague's extra point was no good making it 6-3 at that point. The Purple
Raiders took the lead for good with 5:39 remaining in the first half.
Strauch found the endzone from 11 yards out, making it 13-6. The
senior running back posted his second consecutive 200-yard rushing effort
with 206 yards on 25 carries and two scores. He also led the team in
receptions with four, totaling 20 yards. Mount Union had a chance to add more points in the first half following the explosive four-play, 78-yard touchdown march with less than a minute left. On Wheaton's second play from scrimmage, Justen Stickley sacked Andrews, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Greg Brauer at the Wheaton 20. But a missed 37-yard field goal attempt by Teague ended the threat on the final play of the first half. Strauch's 81-yard run accounted for the only scoring in the second half. Wheaton failed to add points on six possessions in the third and fourth quarters. Three ended in turnovers while two others ended on downs on failed fourth down attempts. Along with his two interceptions, Clum forced a fumble and recorded 14 tackles. Stickley forced one fumble and recovered another, while Ken Whitefield forced a fumble that Ross Watson pounced on. Shaun Spisak led the team in tackles with 18, while Josh Ludwig and Jesse Wells had 11 apiece and Mike Gibbons had 10. Stickley and Wells each recorded sacks, while Ludwig and Joe Culler shared a third. Bruney finished
with 145 rushing yards on 14 carries and was not sacked in the game.
He completed nine of 12 passes for 90 yards. Ciccone added 30 rushing
yards on four carries and one reception for 11 Garett Granberg finished his career as the only running back in Wheaton history to run for more than 1300 yards in a season, but the senior tailback was limited to just 73 yards on 25 carries vs. Mount Union, a 2.9 yards per carry average. The win was the 41st in Mount Union's storied playoff history, the most victories of any Division III team in playoff competition. The Raiders have now won 120 of the last 122 games they have played. The Purple & White will face Carthage next Saturday at Mount Union Stadium. The Redmen defeated Alma (31-28) and Wooster (14-7) in playoff action for the right to face the Raiders next week in the quarterfinals. This will be the first meeting between the two schools on the football field. Carthage enters the contest 11-1 while Mount Union brings a perfect 11-0 mark into the game.
