Purple Raiders open with win for 17th consecutive season Mount Union opened its 2004 season with a 38-0 victory over Washington (MO) in front of 2,256 fans at Francis Field in St. Louis, Missouri, in the first ever meeting between the two schools. The Purple Raiders entered the contest champions of the Ohio Athletic Conference for 12 consecutive years, while the Bears claimed the University Athletic Association three straight seasons. The Purple & White took little time showcasing its big-play ability, as senior quarterback Zac Burney hit senior wide receiver Joe Bugara for a 76-yard touchdown on just the third play from scrimmage. It was the longest reception in Bugara's career, as the Alliance native finished with two catches for a game high 87 yards, and capped a three-play, 71-yard drive that took just 1:11 off the clock. Despite facing a team returning eight starters on offense and 17 overall, the Purple Raiders defense dominated the contest from the outset, forcing the Bears to punt on each of their four first-quarter possessions. Mount Union's defense, which limited it's opponents to just six-points per game during the regular season a year ago while holding the opposition scoreless five times, posted its first shutout on opening day since a 38-0 blanking of Albion to start the 1999 campaign. It marks the 12th straight year Don Montgomery's defense has keep at least one team off the scoreboard. The Raiders made it 14-0 on their next possession when senior running back Jeff Strauch capped a five-play, 79-yard drive by scampering 54 yards to pay dirt with 9:32 left in the first quarter. Strauch finished with a game high 101 rushing yards on 11 carries. Mount Union threatened to add to its lead late in the quarter when they drove 84 yards on 11 plays to the Washington five-yard line, only to turn it over on downs when Bruney was stopped for no gain on fourth and two. The Purple Raiders added a third touchdown on their first possession of the second quarter following a Bears punt. It was an eight-play, 86-yard drive that took just 2:26 off the clock as Bruney found senior wide receiver Jason Cavell from 20 yards out to make it 21-0. The teams then traded turnovers as junior cornerback Ross Watson intercepted a Adam Meranda pass and Anthony Frate recovered a fumble by the quarterback, sandwiched around Burney's first interception of the season. The fumble recovery by Frate set Mount Union up with its best field possession of the game at the Washington 26-yard line. Despite a 14-yard carry on first down by junior running back Aaron Robinson, a personal foul penalty pushed the Raiders into a third and long situation. Bruney hit senior tight end Drew Hanley for 18 yards but Ciccone was stopped for no gain on fourth and one and the Raiders turned the ball over on downs for the second time in the half within the shadow of the Washington goal line. Mount Union was able to add a field goal on the final play of the half after forcing a Bears punt. The six-play, 33-yard drive was capped by George Wilders' 36-yard boot, the longest field goal of his career. The senior place kicker made one of two field goal attempts in the game and converted all five of his extra point tries. Even though the Raiders had a 24-point lead at intermission, it was not a perfect half. Three drives ended without points inside the Washington red zone, two on downs and one on an interception, and a fumbled punt would have given Mount Union starting field possession in Washington territory in the second quarter if not for the miscue. The defense was its normal dominating self in the first half, limiting the Bears to just 85 total yards on 36 plays, while the offense generated 402 yards on 45 first half plays. Mount Union's defense recorded sacks on consecutive plays on Washington's first possession of the second half, resulting in a three-and-out by the Bears offense. For the game, the Purple Raiders' defense recorded eight sacks while Washington finished 5-of-16 on third down conversions and 0-3 on fourth down attempts. Mount Union made it 31-0 on its first drive of the second half. Senior running back Rick Ciccone scored on a seven-yard pass from Bruney, capping a seven-play, 41-yard drive that used 3:31 off the clock. Ciccone finished with 51 rushing yards on 11 carries and 42 receiving yards on five catches. Washington's next series was its best of the game, moving to the Mount Union 27 before turning it over on downs. The Bears had moved 52 yards in seven plays before Meranda's pass fell incomplete on fourth and seven. The teams then traded interceptions as Bruney was picked off for the second time in the game, before senior middle linebacker Shaun Spisak stepped in front of a Nick Henry pass for the Purple Raiders. Each team committed three turnovers in the contest, two interceptions and a fumble. Mount Union's fumble came on special teams. It was at this point that the Purple & White started substituting lots of players. It's final possession of the third quarter ended in it's only punt of the game. Mount Union missed another scoring opportunity on its first possession of the final quarter, starting a drive on Washington's 34-yard line following a 31-yard punt return by junior Scott Casto. The Raiders moved to the Bears six-yard line following an 11-play, 28-yard drive, before Wilders missed a 23-yard field goal. It marked the fourth time in the game Mount Union penetrated Washington's red zone without scoring any points. Freshman running back Trevor Bruney finished off the scoring by going over from two-yards out with 3:40 remaining in the contest. Bruney proceeded that with a 33-yard run on his first Mount Union carry. The score completed a seven-play, 64-yard drive. Bruney completed 18-of-27 passes for 294 yards and the three scores, and added 47 rushing yards on four attempts. Sophomore Michael Jorris and junior Randy Mason also saw action at quarterback, each completing two of four passes. Defensively, Spisak led the charge with eight tackles, while junior Jesse Wells added seven. Frate and juniors Greg Brauer and Sam Vucelich each recorded two sacks, while senior Johnny Josef and junior Mike Gibbons had one apiece. Mount Union limited Washington to just five yards rushing on 33 carries, and 165 total yards for the contest. The Purple Raiders' balanced attack produced 334 passing yards and 305 rushing yards for a 639 yard total. Mount Union averaged 8.2 yards per play, while limiting the Bears to a 2.4 average. With the win, the Purple Raiders have won 95 consecutive regular season contests, and 110 of the last 112 games they have played overall. Mount Union will have a bye this upcoming Saturday before opening conference play on September 18th against John Carroll with a rare night contest at Mount Union Stadium.
