Seniors Jesse Clum and Anthony Frate each returned interceptions back for scores last week vs. John Carroll. Last night in front of 3,377 fans at Memorial Stadium in Westerville, Frate did it again, returning an interception 33 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to put the game out of the reach of the upset minded Cardinals. The pick and return gave Mount Union a 34-10 lead with 13:02 remaining. The outside linebacker became the first Purple Raider defensive player to score in back-to-back games since Jesse Pearson did the trick in four straight games during the 1999 season. One of the games during Pearson's streak was the memorable triple overtime affair with John Carroll in University Heights in which Mount Union finally prevailed 57-51. Pearson set a Mount Union record that season by scoring five defensive touchdowns. Frate made numerous big plays during Mount's playoff run a year ago, and first found the endzone during the second round match up with Wis-La Crosse when he bolted 48 yards with an interception to give the Raiders a lead they would never relinquish late in the second quarter of that contest. The First-Team All-OAC performer has 22 tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery to go along with the two interceptions this season. Frate was not the only defensive player to score against Otterbein. Junior outside linebacker Mike Gibbons grabbed a Jared Adkins fumble out of the air and rumbled 16 yards with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter to increase the lead to 17-0. Adkins was looking to throw when senior defensive tackle Josh Ludwig separated him from the ball with a blindside hit that the senior quarterback will still remember, and feel, today. It was Ludwig's first sack of the season. The Purple Raiders recorded three sacks in the game and have a total of 15 through three games this year. The Mount Union team record for sacks in a season came during the 1997 campaign when the Raiders recorded 53 sacks during the regular season. The defense actually amassed a total of 77 sacks that year, including playoffs, but only regular season numbers were recognized by the NCAA at that time. By comparison, Mount Union recorded 22 sacks during the regular season a year ago, with a total of 33 when counting the four playoff contests. While we're talking about numbers, how about 33.7 or 1.1. Those are they amount of rushing yards per game and rushing yards per carry Mount Union is allowing this year. The defense has surrendered just two field goals and one touchdown on the season. So basically, Don Mongomery's defense is outscoring the opposition's offense 28 to 13. To take it one step further, after three games, Frate has accounted for more points than the other team's offense 14-13. Ouch. Mount Union settled for a field goal on its first drive of the game when George Wilders booted a 28 yarder capping a nine-play, 49-yard drive 4:19 into the contest. Wilders later added a 20-yard field goal with 5:45 remaining in the first half to give the Raiders a 20-3 lead at the intermission. The senior place kicker has made three of four field goal attempts and 17 of 18 extra point tries on the year. The Cardinals got on the board when John Sims hit a 34-yard field goal with 11:33 left in the second quarter, capping a 12-play, 55-yard drive. The big play of that march was a fake punt by Otterbein from its own 37-yard line when linebacker Nathan Speiser took the short snap and ran 12 yards right up the middle for a first down. Rick Ciccone made it 10-0 with 3:48 remaining in the first quarter on a one-yard scamper. The score capped a nice, eight-play, 91-yard drive. Zac Bruney hit Joe Bugara for 25 yards and Scott Casto for 45 during the drive. The senior quarterback completed ten of 22 passes for 188 yards with one interception. Casto caught three balls for 60 yards to lead Mount Union, while Bugara had two catches for 53 yards, including a beautiful 28-yard catch in traffic at the Cardinals' 27 late in the game that set up the final touchdown. Jason Cavell and Drew Hanley each added two catches for 32 yards. Ciccone's second touchdown came with 8:35 left in the third from four yards out, capping a 10-play, 70-yard drive. The senior running back finished with 67 yards on 13 carries and added one catch for 11 yards. Otterbein finally cracked the endzone with :58 remaining in the third stanza on a four-yard pass from Adkins to Marshall Goodman. The score came on a fourth and goal play and was setup when Bruney was intercepted by Colt Dodrill deep in his own territory. It took Otterbein eight plays to go 19 yards, and it was the first touchdown surrendered by the Raiders' defense this season, coming almost 11 full quarters into the campaign. Jeff Strauch finished the scoring with a three-yard run with 4:10 left in the contest. That capped a nine-play, 54-yard drive to make it 41-10. The senior running back led the Raiders in rushing with 87 yards on 18 attempts. Junior Aaron Robinson also got some carries, picking up 17 yards on four rushes. Defensively, Frate led the team with 13 tackles and the interception. Senior strong saftey Ken Whitfield also recorded an interception to go along with nine tackles. Justen Stickley recorded two of Mount Union's three quarterback sacks. The Raiders totaled 366 yards on 59 plays, averaging 6.2 yards per play, while limiting the Cardinals to 213 yards on 66 plays (3.2 ypp). The win was Mount Union's 97th straight regular season victory, and the 87th win in a row against Ohio Athletic Conference competition. The Purple & White have now won 112 of the last 114 games they've played. The Purple Raiders improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. A second straight trip to the Columbus area awaits as Mount Union travels to Capital next Saturday to face the unbeaten Crusaders at Bernlohr Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. Capital blanked Heidelberg 38-0 yesterday in a tune up for the Purple Raiders, and also enters the contest 3-0 overall and 2-0 in OAC games. Last year Mount Union defeated Capital 35-7 in Alliance, and have won 16 straight in the series dating back to the Crusaders last win in 1987. Overall, the Purple Raiders lead in the series 24-12.
