That didn’t faze an inspired Polar Bear team, playing in front of 3,487 fans at brand new Dial-Roberson Stadium Saturday, as Ohio Northern scored two first half touchdowns, matched the point total against the Purple Raiders to date by scoring 27 points and actually took the lead midway through the third period on the 12-time defending conference champions. Mount Union responded as they almost always have during this remarkable run by scoring the game’s final 21 points, in posting a 41-27 victory. The Purple Raiders made the plays when they had to, converted five of six fourth downs, and brought sole possession of first place in the conference back to Alliance after the hard fought win.
But maybe most important, Saturday marked the first time this year Mount
Union has been tested. It 13-plays, 82-yards, 6:02 off the clock. All but one play on the ground. The biggest drive of the year to date came in the third quarter with Mount Union trailing and ended with the game tied at 27 and 2:28 remaining in the period. The biggest play of the drive in terms of yardage was the final play, an 18-yard run by Rick Ciccone for a touchdown. But the play of the drive was a fourth and two pass from Zac Bruney to Joe Bugara for five yards from the Northern 36-yard line. Ciccone carried the ball on 10 of the 13 plays, including the first seven. The thing that
made this drive so impressive was the fact that the Polar Bear defense had been dominating
the third quarter. In Mount Union's first two possessions of the
second half, the Raiders ran four plays,
fumbled twice and lost 24 yards. One drive ended in a
turnover, the other with a punt. And Mount Union had been outscored in
the quarter 13-0. Then the Raiders looked at the scoreboard, saw themselves trailing for the first time this season and responded like a champion. It was raining, the crowd was screaming and Mount Union kept its poise. You want someone to step up on this offense? How about Zac Bruney? He completed 17 of 27 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns. Or Jason Cavell? He caught five passes for a personal best 184 yards and three touchdowns. Or Ciccone? He posted career highs in carries with 35 and yards with 148, scoring once on the ground and once through the air on five receptions for 53 yards. All season the defense has been the talk of the town, but on Saturday the offense responded in a way that would make any past championship team proud. The third
quarter ended with Ohio Northern driving to midfield and the game tied at
27. Then, on the third play of the fourth quarter, Polar Bear quarterback
Corey Minnfield was intercepted by Jesse Clum at the seven-yard line,
preventing Northern from regaining the lead, and the rest of the game
belonged to the Purple Raiders. It took Mount Union two plays to go 93 yards, the big play a 90-yard strike from Bruney to Cavell, giving the Raiders the lead for good at 34-27. The play was the longest from scrimmage for the Purple & White this year. The defense held Ohio Northern scoreless in the fourth quarter, while the offense added one more score, a 13-play, 47-yard march using 6:09 of the clock. Bruney completed a seven-yard pass to Ciccone to culminate the drive, giving Mount Union a two touchdown lead with 1:52 remaining. When the drive started, it was a one score game with eight minutes still to play. When it was over the Raiders had sealed their 101st consecutive regular season victory. Mount Union got
on the board first on its initial possession of the game. Bruney found
Cavell from 33 yards out just 2:10 into the contest to make it 7-0.
Northern tied it midway through the first on a three-yard pass from
Minnfield to Greg Evilsizor before Cavell caught a 39-yard pass from Bruney
to make it 14-7 with 5:07 to play in the opening quarter. The Polar Bears tied it at 14 when Minnfield and Evilsizor hooked up on a 48 yard pass play at the 11:41 mark of the second quarter. George Wilders then kicked a 24-yard field goal and Chad Teague added one from 28 yards to give Mount Union a 20-14 lead at the intermission. Ohio Northern scored twice early in the third to take the lead when Brian Lee caught a 10-yard pass from Minnfield. The extra point was no good, making it 20-20. Then Zach Weber scored on a one-yard run with 8:55 to go in the quarter, giving the Polar Bears the short-lived lead. Mount Union totaled 508 yards in the game, compared to Ohio Northern's 321, and enjoyed a 16-minute advantage in time of possession. Clum led the
defense with 11 tackles to go along with his second interception of the
season. Paul Dannemiller recorded his first career interception
in the game. Shaun Spisak had eight tackles while Ken Whitfield
recorded seven. Mount Union improved to 7-0 with the win, 6-0 in conference play. Next up is a trip to Baldwin-Wallace for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff next Saturday at Finnie Stadium in Berea. The Yellow Jackets were stung by Capital last Saturday and enter the contest 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the OAC. Baldwin-Wallace owns the series record against the Purple Raiders 21-20-1, but have not enjoyed a victory over Mount Union since 1994. The Raiders have won nine straight overall and six consecutive times at Finnie Stadium, with the last loss in Berea coming by the final of 21-18 in 1991.
