Four fourth quarter touchdowns push Raiders to 9-0 A peculiar thing happened prior to Saturday’s Ohio Athletic Conference match-up between Mount Union and Muskingum. Someone forgot to tell the 1-7 Fighting Muskies they had no chance against the unbeaten conference champion Purple Raiders. Mount Union had won 15 straight vs. Muskingum and was unbeaten in the last 19 contests dating back to its last loss in the series in 1984. You’d have to go back ten years to the 1994 season to find the last time Muskingum even kept the final score within 30 points. But on Saturday, in front of 4,032 fans at Mount Union Stadium, the Muskies stood toe to toe with the 13-time defending conference champs for three quarters before the Purple Raiders exploded for four fourth quarter touchdowns to pull away for the 34-7 victory. It was odd that Muskingum won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. After all, when you take into account that the average final score of the last ten meetings is 50-7, chances seemed good the game would be out of reach by the time the Muskies took the field in the second half. But they knew what they were doing. Following the opening kickoff, Muskingum forced a turnover when Jeff Strauch fumbled after a nine-yard gain at his own 30-yard line on the game's first snap from scrimmage. It would take Muskingum nine plays to travel the 30 yards but when Steve Howard took it in from two-yards out, it marked only the second time all season Mount Union trailed in a contest. The Raiders only threat to score in the opening quarter came when George Wilders 23-yard field goal attempt was blocked and the Purple & White trailed 7-0 after one. Mount Union finally knotted the score six minutes into the second stanza when Rick Ciccone bolted 25 yards for a touchdown on fourth and one, capping a six-play, 51-yard march. Ciccone left the game later in the quarter with a hip pointer, but not before carrying the ball eight times for 57 yards. At the half, the Purple Raiders had an advantage in total yards of 136 to 80 for the Muskies, but held the ball for three minutes less than their visitors, and could only manage to convert one of six third down opportunities. The two teams played to a scoreless third quarter with the only scoring chance in the frame coming by Muskingum following a Zac Bruney fumble on his own 42. The Muskies moved the ball 13 yards in 11 plays before an incomplete pass on fourth and 18 ended the threat from the Purple Raiders 29-yard line. The tie score entering the final quarter marked the first time in 36 regular season contests Mount Union did not own the lead for the entire final frame. You have to go back to the game vs. John Carroll played at Bedford High School in 2001 to find the last time the Purple & White were tied or trailed in the fourth quarter of a regular season contest. Through three periods Mount Union led in total offense 187 yards to 110, but converted just one of seven third down tries. The drive that gave the Raiders their first lead actually started with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter at the Muskingum 25. Mount Union went 75 yards in 10 plays, capped by Bruney’s five-yard strike to Drew Hanley, making it 14-7 with 12:33 remaining. Hanley recorded two receptions for 30 yards in the contest. Think about this... the last time Mount Union entered the fourth quarter of a game without ever having the lead was all the way back in week 10 during the 1998 season, when a Chuck Moore touchdown from one yard out with 10:12 remaining gave the Purple Raiders its first lead at 24-21 vs. Baldwin-Wallace at Finnie Stadium in Berea. Mount Union would add another score later in that contest and go on to the 30-21 win on its way to the national championship that season. That was 82 games ago! Even in losses to Rowan in 1999 and St. John's last year, Mount Union enjoyed leads prior to the fourth quarter in those games. The Raiders would tack on three more scores before the game was over. Bruney found Jason Cavell for a 68-yard bomb with 8:41 to play. Cavell finished with a game high 108 receiving yards on three catches. Wilders extra point was blocked making it 20-7. Bruney then found Scott Casto from 24 yards out three minutes later. Casto finished with three grabs for 57 yards. Bruney completed 12 of 18 passes on the day for 224 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Aaron Robinson finished the scoring on a one-yard run with 1:59 to play. Mount Union finished with 377 yards compared to Muskingum's 156. Shaun Spisak led the defense with 13 tackles, while Mike Gibbons added 12 and Jesse Wells chipped in with 11. The win was Mount Union's 103rd straight regular season victory, and the 93rd win in a row against OAC competition. The Purple & White have now won 118 of the last 120 games they've played. Mount Union improved to 9-0 on the season, 8-0 in conference play. The Purple Raiders will try to complete a 10th straight unbeaten regular season when they host Heidelberg in the regular season finale Saturday at Mount Union Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. Heidelberg enters the contest 0-9 on the season and have lost 15 straight to Mount Union. Overall the Purple Raiders lead in the series 34-13.
