Crusaders stun Purple Raiders with touchdown in final minute Mary Hardin-Baylor scored 17 fourth quarter points Saturday to come back from 14 down to defeat Mount Union 38-35 in the national semifinals before 2,945 fans at Mount Union Stadium. The final score came on a touchdown pass with 48 seconds remaining when quarterback Josh Welch found tight end Walter Sharp in the endzone on fourth and 12 from the Purple Raiders' 24-yard line. It's the first home loss suffered by Mount Union in five years dating back to the overtime loss in the semifinal round of the 1999 playoffs, 24-17, to Rowan. It looked good for the Purple & White in the final seconds of the third quarter as they had built a 35-21 lead and had possession of the football. But on the quarter's final play the Crusaders recovered a fumble when the shotgun snap hit the leg of a receiver in motion on the Mount Union 32-yard line, and it was all Mary Hardin-Baylor after that. The ensuing drive stalled at the seven, but Zach Newcomb's 24-yard field goal gave the Crusaders life with 10:28 remaining, making it a 35-24 game. Following a three and out by Mount Union, Mary Hardin-Baylor went back to work, driving 83 yards in 17 plays to cut the lead to just four points with 5:11 to play. Anthony Carter took it in from five yards out to make it 35-31. Mount Union again failed to pick up a first down on offense and gave the ball back to the Crusaders with 3:16 to go. Mary Hardin-Baylor began it's final drive at it's own 32-yard line and marched to the Purple Raiders' 24, facing a fourth and 12 following a sack by Anthony Frate, which resulted in a five-yard loss. After using its last time out, Mary Hardin-Baylor's prayers were answered when Welch found Sharp two yards deep in the endzone when it looked as if the pass had a chance to be batted down at the goal line but just sailed over the outstretched hand of Ken Whitfield. The play gave the Crusaders their first lead of the game at 38-35. Mount Union had one final chance but a desperation pass from it's own 42 fell incomplete and the season came to an end. It marks only the fourth time in the 12 years the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl will be played in Salem, Virginia without Mount Union as a participant. The Purple Raiders could not move the ball in the fourth quarter but scored three times in the third stanza to break a halftime tie. Bruney found Jason Cavell on a slip screen from 25 yards out 4:10 into the period to go up 21-14. Following a Chad Starns two-yard run knotting the score at 21, Bruney scampered 10 yards to make it 28-21 with 4:20 remaining the quarter. Then the special teams came into play when Johnny Josef blocked a punt on the Crusaders next possession, which was recovered and returned 11 yards for a touchdown by Wade Kirk, giving Mount Union its first two-score lead of the game. The teams traded scores in the first half. Mount Union got on the board on the initial possession of the game, driving 64 yards in five plays as Bruney found Drew Hanley on a 51-yard aerial just 2:11 into the contest. Mary Hardin-Baylor tied it at seven eight minutes later when Welch kept it on an option from 13 yards out, ending the first quarter tied at seven. Mount Union went back on top with just 1:28 to go in the half on Rick Ciccone's two-yard run, but Mary Hardin-Baylor evened it again 1:01 later when Welch found Austin Schrader on a 25-yard pass with just 27 seconds remaining in the first half. Mary Hardin-Baylor finished with 477 yards to 311 for Mount Union. Starnes led all rushers with 110 yards on 21 carries, while Ciccone's 15-carry, 53-yard performance paced the Raiders. Schrader caught four passes for 87 yards while Scott Casto had three receptions totaling 83 yards. Both quarterbacks finished with almost identical numbers. Bruney completed nine of 22 passes for 191 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while Welch was nine of 21 for 169 yards, two scores and one interception. Shaun Spisak paced both teams with 18 tackles, while Jesse Clum finished with 15. Mount Union had surrendered just 13 points total in the fourth quarter all season, but gave up 17 in the final quarter against Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Crusaders will face Linfield in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl as each team tries to claim its first Division III national championship.
