Mount Union marks decade of dominance with win over Marietta Mount Union defeated Marietta Saturday 57-0 marking the school's 100th straight regular season victory. The last loss during regular season play came ten years and one day ago, during the 1994 campaign when Baldwin-Wallace beat the Purple Raiders 23-10. That game also marked Mount Union's last conference loss as the Raiders have now won a record 90 straight Ohio Athletic Conference regular season games. Mount Union scored on each of its three first quarter possessions against the Pioneers to open up a 20-0 lead after one period. Zac Bruney completed all six of his pass attempts and threw touchdown strikes covering 27 yards to Drew Hanley, 21 yards to Rick Ciccone and 35 yards to Jason Cavell. George Wilders was one of two on extra point attempts with his third try hitting the right goal post. The Raiders averaged 14.3 yards per play in the frame and faced only one third down. On the season, the Purple & White have converted 41 of 75 third down chances (54.7%) which is tops in the OAC. Mount Union never punted in the contest but did turn it over twice on fumbles. The first of those miscues came on the initial drive of the second quarter and marked the only possession of the first half that did not end in a touchdown. Bruney threw for two more scores in the first half, a 16 yarder to Hanley and a 14-yard strike to Joe Bugara. Hanley finished with four receptions for a game high 76 yards and the two scores, while Bugara added two touchdowns on three receptions totaling 34 yards. Mount Union held a 341 to 112 advantage in total yards at the break, running 32 plays compared to 34 for Marietta, but had the ball almost four minutes less. It was 34-0 at halftime and through six games the Raiders have not surrendered a touchdown and have outscored their opponents 175-3 in the first half of play. 2,712 fans were in attendance for M-Club Hall of Fame Day and Community Day at Mount Union Stadium. At halftime three new members were inducted into the Hall of Fame. The 2004 class included Paul Cotton (wrestling / class of 1983), Mike Jarrett (football / class of 1987), and Cora Owens (track / class of 1988). The Purple Raiders only had the ball twice in the third quarter but held it for almost 12 minutes, resulting in 10 points. The first drive was a 17-play march, covering 75 yards following the kickoff. The drive took 7:38 off the clock, meaning the Raiders had the ball for more than half the quarter on its initial possession. Mount Union converted four of five third down attempts before facing a fourth and goal from the five-yard line. Chad Teague booted his first field goal of the season, from 22 yards out, extending the lead to 37-0. Marietta converted on only three of 12 third down tries in the game and did not pick up a first down on eight of its 12 possessions. In the second half they only picked up one first down and had just 11 total yards of offense. Following the Raiders long first possession, the Pioneers held the ball for only three plays and less than two minutes before giving it back to Mount Union. Scott Casto then returned Marietta's punt 54 yards setting the Raiders up on the Pioneer 39-yard line. It became 44-0 on Bruney's final series of the day, as the senior quarterback connected with Bugara on a two-yard touchdown pass. Bruney finished 20 of 26 for 252 yards and six touchdowns, which is a personal career best. The six touchdown pass performance matches a Mount Union regular season record that Jim Ballard first set in 1991 vs. Hiram, and Bill Borchert accomplished four times. Although six touchdown passes is a regular season record, Ballard set and still holds a NCAA Division III playoff record eight touchdown pass performance vs. St. John's (MN) in a 56-8 win during the semifinal round of the 1993 playoffs. Mount Union added two scores in the fourth quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Kelechi Ibeh and a four yard scamper by Jeff Berdysz. 11 different running backs combined for 346 rushing yards in the contest, led by Ciccone's 91 yards on 12 attempts. Aaron Robinson added 75 yards on eight carries. Michael Jorris and Randy Mason combined with Bruney through the air, completing 25 of 31 passes for 288 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. Defensively, Mike Gibbons had a team high 13 hits, while Johnny Josef and Jesse Wells each added seven. Mount Union recorded three more sacks and have a league leading 33 on the season. The Raiders totaled 634 yards on 78 plays, averaging 8.1 yards per play, while limiting the Pioneers to 123 yards on 49 plays (2.5 ypp). The Purple & White have now won 115 of the last 117 games they've played and improve to 6-0 on the season, 5-0 in conference play. A trip to Ada, Ohio awaits as Mount Union visits Dial-Roberson Stadium next week, the brand new home of Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears enter the contest 5-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. Last year Mount Union defeated Ohio Northern 55-7 in Alliance, and have won 21 straight in the series dating back to the Polar Bears last win in 1984. Overall, the Purple Raiders lead in the series 33-12-1.
