The 52-point victory matched the worst defeat by a John Carroll team to Mount Union in the 22 games played between the two schools. The 59-7 win in the quarterfinal round of the 1997 playoffs by Mount Union was also a 52-point margin of victory. The Purple Raiders now own a 18-2-2 series mark over the Blue Streaks and have won 15 games in a row dating back to a 20-20 tie in 1991. Mount Union's defense was so dominant that John Carroll did not record a first down until its final drive of the first half. At intermission, the Blue Streaks had amassed just 42 yards of offense, with those coming on their final drive in the second quarter. That drive ended when Mount Union senior free safety Jesse Clum intercepted a pass on his own 28-yard line and electrified the Mount Union Stadium record crowd of 8,972 fans by returning it 72 yards for a touchdown.
John Carroll might as well have gotten on the bus at that point and headed back to University Heights. It was 34-0 and the game was over. If there was any doubt about that, it was settled on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter when senior outside linebacker Anthony Frate stepped in front of the next JCU pass attempt and returned it 15 yards for another score. That made it 41-0 and the Purple Raider offense had only accounted for half of the points. Mount Union's first touchdown of the night came via the special teams when John Carroll attempted to punt following its first possession of the game. Senior strong safety Ken Whitfield blasted through to block the punt, which was picked up and returned 15 yards for a touchdown by senior cornerback Wade Kirk. Senior place kicker George Wilders' extra point made it 7-0 just 4:43 into the contest. It's the second consecutive game that John Carroll has allowed its opponent to block a punt and return it for a touchdown against them. The Purple & White offense made it 13-0 on an 11-play, 71-yard drive on its second possession of the game. Senior quarterback Zac Bruney found senior running back Jeff Strauch from nine-yards out for the score. Wilders extra point attempt hit the left upright and bounced out. It was the only PAT he missed in eight attempts on the night.
Mount Union struck quickly on the first play of the second quarter when Bruney found senior wide receiver Jason Cavell streaking down the visitor sideline for a 57-yard strike that made it 20-0. It was a one-play drive that took just eight seconds. Cavell finished with two catches for 63 yards and the one touchdown. Strauch then found the end zone on a one-yard run that made it 27-0 with just over four minutes remaining in the second quarter, capping a 10-play, 55-yard drive that took 4:23. He finished with 43 rushing yards on 12 carries and 40 receiving yards on four catches with two scores. At this point in
the game, John Carroll had -4 yards of total offense. The Blue Streaks
then moved the ball from their own eight following the kick, to their 49-yard
line. Faced with a fourth and 15 with just seconds remaining in the half,
Head Coach Regis Scafe opted to try to make a big play and get his team Following Frate's interception return for a touchdown, Mount Union scored twice more in the third stanza. Senior running back Rick Ciccone found pay dirt from one-yard out with 9:41 remaining in the quarter, capping a seven-play, 51-yard drive. Ciccone finished with 19 yards on nine carries and added three receptions for 28 yards. The Raiders final score came on a beautiful pass from Bruney to junior wide receiver Scott Casto covering 24 yards. Casto had three catches in the game for 50 yards. That touchdown finished off a 10-play, 67-yard march that took six minutes off the clock. At this point there was 2:27 remaining in the third quarter. Mount Union had accumulated 332 yards of total offense, while limiting John Carroll to just 45 yards. It had been an amazing effort by the first team unit, most of which were pretty much done for the night.
At wideout throughout the night, senior Joe Bugara had two receptions for 24 yards and senior tight end Drew Hanley made two catches for 21 yards. John Carroll finally got on the board with 10:57 remaining in the contest when Dino Zuzic nailed a 27-yard field goal to make the final 55-3. The kick capped an eight-play, 35-yard drive in which the Blue Streaks opted to get points when faced with a fourth and four from Mount Union's nine-yard line. The large lead enabled the Purple Raiders to get a lot of young guys playing time in the final quarter. Sophomore Michael Jorris and junior Randy Mason each had turns running the offense at quarterback. Junior running back Aaron Robinson looked good, rushing for 41 yards on seven carries and grabbing two passes for eight yards. Junior Kelechi Ibeh also had a couple carries for five yards and a reception covering nine yards. Defensively, Mount Union was led by senior middle linebacker Shaun Spisak's eight tackles. Spisak also recovered a fumble. Senior outside linebacker Joe Culler also totaled eight tackles, while Whitfield had six to go along with the blocked punt.
For the game, the Purple Raiders finished with 353 total yards, averaging 5.8 yards per play, while the Blue Streaks managed 142 yards (2.4 ypp), most of which came in the final quarter. Mount Union's defense has not allowed a touchdown in eight quarters played this season. Next up is the first of two back to back trips to the Columbus area as the Raiders will travel to Westerville next Saturday for another 7:00 p.m. evening kickoff at Memorial Stadium against Otterbein. The Cardinals hung tough with Capital, falling 24-17, to move to 1-1 (0-1) on the season. Last year Mount Union defeated Otterbein 66-0 in Alliance, and have won 25 straight in the series.
