Raiders finish off 10th straight unbeaten regular season with win over the 'Berg. Mount Union completed a 10th consecutive unbeaten regular season with a 59-10 victory over Heidelberg Saturday in front of 4,272 fans at Mount Union Stadium. The Purple Raiders have won 104 consecutive regular season games, including 94 straight Ohio Athletic Conference contests, dating back to a 23-10 loss to Baldwin-Wallace on October 15, 1994. Including the playoffs, Mount Union has won 119 of the last 121 games it has played. Jeff Strauch led the way against the Student Princes with a personal best 221 rushing yards on 22 attempts (10.0 ypc). The senior running back also caught three passes for 46 yards and tied a team record with six touchdowns in the contest. Strauch scored on runs of six, four, 54 and 11 yards, and on receptions of seven and 36 yards, to tie the mark originally set 73 years ago when Leo Grimes scored six times for the Purple Raiders on November 7, 1931 in a 52-0 win over Detroit Tech. Mount Union jumped out in front of Heidelberg 14-0 after the first quarter and 28-10 at intermission. All four first half touchdowns were credited to Strauch, including a 54-yard run with 5:22 remaining in the second stanza to finish off the first half scoring. The 'Berg got on the board in the second with a 32-yard field goal by Craig Smith and a nine-yard pass from Bryan Prorok to Roc Patterson. It would be their only points of the game. The Purple Raiders rushed for 240 yards in the first half, including 178 by Strauch, while limiting the Student Princes to minus seven yards rushing on 16 attempts. Zac Bruney completed eight of 14 passes for 95 yards but two interceptions prevented the score from being worse than the 18-point halftime margin. Mount Union put the game away in the third quarter with three touchdowns. Strauch scored twice and Aaron Robinson added a 16-yard score as the Raiders led 49-10 after three. Justen Stickley's fumble recovery and return to the 'Berg 16-yard line set up the final score. The Raiders added 10 fourth quarter points when Michael Jorris hooked up with Nick Ciani from the 10 and George Wilders booted a 19-yard field goal. It was Jorris' first career touchdown pass and Ciani's first career touchdown reception. Bruney completed 13 of 20 passes for 179 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The senior quarterback went over the 2000 yard passing mark in the contest, throwing for 2,151 yards during the regular season, with 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Robinson added 91 rushing yards on 11 attempts to Strauch's total, while Kelechi Ibeh chipped in with 30 yards on five rushes and led the team in receiving with six catches totaling 67 yards. Jason Cavell had two catches for 39 yards and Drew Hanley had two for 27. Defensively, Shaun Spisak led the squad with 10 tackles while Mike Gobbons added eight. Jesse Clum recorded his team leading fourth interception while Ryan Fehl got the first pick of his career. Mount Union finished with 570 total yards, including 375 on the ground. Heidelberg had 217 total yards including just three rushing yards on 28 attempts. With the win Mount Union receives a first round bye in the NCAA Division III playoffs and will await the winner of the Mount St. Joseph (10-0) at Wheaton (9-1) game. The Raiders have never played the Lions in football, while the Purple & White have faced the Thunder three times, including each of the last two seasons. Mount Union is 3-0 all-time vs. Wheaton, with all three match-ups coming in playoff action.
