With six minutes remaining in the third quarter and the score tied at 17, Shaun Spisak hit Dante Washington at the Redmen 30-yard line, forcing a fumble after the Carthage running back caught a screen pass. Marcelo DeAngelis pounced on the loose ball for the fumble recovery. It was Washington's only fumble of the season on 492 touches, and Carthage, plus 31 in turnover ratio coming in, finished minus one on the day. Four plays later the Raiders faced a fourth and one at the Redmen 21. Zac Bruney faked a handoff up the middle to Jeff Strauch and bolted on a naked bootleg around right end 21 yards for a touchdown. That score gave Mount Union its largest lead of the game to that point at 24-17.
The Purple & White added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to pull away from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin co-champions. The first came
with 10:25 remaining, a 53-yard pass from Bruney to Drew Hanley, making it 31-20.
It was just a two-play, 54-yard drive, which was setup on a 22-yard kickoff
return by Robert McDavid. The The final points came with 6:32 remaining. On fourth and four from the Carthage 30, Joe Bugara made a spectacular catch of a Bruney pass in the endzone to give Mount Union a 38-20 lead. That drive was only a four-play, 36-yard march following a fake punt attempt that was stuffed for a two-yard loss at the Purple Raiders' 38. Carthage lost yards twice on fourth down attempts in the final period. Prior to Mount Union outscoring the Redmen 21-3 over the final 19 minutes, the team's traded leads throughout the game, with four lead changes in the first half alone. The Raiders opened the scoring with a 27-yard field goal by George Wilders 2:44 into the first period. It capped a six-play, 42-yard drive following the opening kickoff. Carthage then took the lead 7-3 on its second possession following a 15-yard punt into the wind and 12-yard return to the six-yard line. It took the Redmen two plays to hit paydirt as Washington scored his first of two touchdowns on the day.
Mount Union regained the lead with 2:29 left in the quarter when Bruney scored his first of two rushing touchdowns on a four-yard scamper. Twice on the 14-play, 80-yard drive the Raiders converted fourth and one opportunities to keep possession of the football. Mount Union finished a perfect five for five in fourth down tries in the game. Carthage answered with a nine-play, 71-yard drive that was capped by Washington’s second score with 12:48 remaining in the second stanza, giving the Redmen at 14-10 lead. But that lead lasted only 15 seconds following Scott Campbell's 15-yard kickoff return to midfield. Bruney hit Jason Cavell on a 50-yard scoring strike on the first play and just like that it was advantage Raiders 21-17.
Carthage had an opportunity
to take the lead before intermission but Ross Watson stopped the drive with his
third interception of the season in the final minute deep in Raider
territory.
The Redmen were limited to two field goals in the second half to finish off their scoring on the day as Mount Union did a better job defensively in the second half. Carthage converted four of seven third down tries in the first two quarters but were limited to one of six in the second half. The Purple Raiders had converted 50% of its third down opportunities in the first 11 games, but were held to just one of 11 against the aggressive, very quick Redmen defense. Mount Union was 0-5 in the first half and 1-6 in the second, but that was offset by the 5-5 clip on fourth downs in the contest. Bruney finished 10 of 17 for 230 yards passing, with three touchdowns and one interception. He added two rushing scores and 28 yards on six carries. Cavell led all receivers with three grabs covering 78 yards and one score. Jeff Strauch led the ground attack with 46 yards on 18 carries, while Rick Ciccone added 45 yards on 14 attempts. Spisak led the defense with
17 tackles and has 35 in the two playoff games. Head coach Larry
Kehres commented in the post game press conference that the senior from
Nordonia High School is playing as Jesse Clum added 15 tackles in the contest, while Josh Ludwig totaled 11 and Jesse Wells chipped in with 10. The Purple Raiders finished with 349 total yards (6.2 ypp) while Carthage had 282 (4.4 ypp). Mount Union will face Mary Hardin-Baylor next Saturday at Mount Union Stadium in the first meeting between the two schools on the gridiron. The Crusaders defeated Washington & Jefferson 52-16 in playoff action today. Mary Hardin-Baylor will enter the contest 12-1 while Mount Union brings a perfect 12-0 mark into the game.
