Ground game key in 10th straight victory versus Baldwin-Wallace The top two rushing offenses in the Ohio Athletic Conference collided in Berea Saturday on a day when wind conditions made it next to impossible to pass the football. The Purple Raiders got its ground game going early, rushing for 324 yards in defeating Baldwin-Wallace for the 10th consecutive time. There have been 43 games played in the series, which dates back to 1896. Each team has now won 21 times with one tie. The Purple Raiders 24-7 victory in front of 6,885 fans at Finnie Stadium, coupled with Ohio Northern's win at Capital, gives Mount Union at least a share of its 13th consecutive conference football championship and the school's 16th OAC title overall. Mount Union set the tone on the first drive when it marched 80 yards on 13 plays, taking 6:32 off the clock. Rick Ciccone took it the final four yards for a touchdown and George Wilders made it 7-0 with the extra point. All 13 plays, which were into the wind, were rushing plays. The Purple Raiders made it 14-0 with 8:36 remaining in the second quarter when Ciccone took scored from six-yards out. That capped a 10-play, 46-yard drive that used 5:01 off the clock. Mount Union totally dominated Baldwin-Wallace in the first half. At the intermission, the Purple Raiders had 211 yards compared to just 45 for the Yellow Jackets. B-W never threatened to score while the Purple & White held the ball for over 21 of the initial 30 minutes. The Raiders really should have had a bigger lead at halftime. They missed an opportunity for points in the first period when a bad snap on a short field goal attempt ended a drive, and they drove to the B-W 20 in the second quarter before Zac Bruney could not connect with Jason Cavell on a fourth and eight attempt. Mount Union did not have to punt once in the first half. Neither team was successful throwing the ball all day. Bruney completed five of 11 passes for 58 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. He carried the ball six times for 53 yards. The Yellow Jackets threw the ball 16 times, completing three, with three interceptions. Baldwin-Wallace's only highlight of the day came on the first play from scrimmage of the second half when Brandon Hedges bolted 58 yards for the Yellow Jackets only score. Hedges, the leading rusher in the OAC, finished with 111 yards on 21 carries, with all but 53 of those yards coming on the one carry. The Purple Raiders then added 10 points in the quarter. Chad Teague kicked a 26-yard field goal at the 9:37 mark, capping a 14-play, 70-yard drive, pushing the score to 17-7. Then with 5:09 remaining, the defense added a touchdown. Ross Watson intercepted his second pass of the season at his own 39. He was grabbed immediately but before going down was able to hand the ball to Wade Kirk, who raced across the field and down the visitor's sideline 61 yards for the touchdown. It was the defense's fifth touchdown this season, while the special teams have scored three times. Neither team scored in the final stanza as Mount Union improved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the OAC. Ciccone led the ground attack with 147 yards on 32 attempts and two scores. Jeff Strauch added 108 yards on 27 carries. Drew Hanley had two catches for 28 yards to lead all receivers. Mike Gibbons, Shaun Spisak and Jesse Wells led the defense with six tackles each, while Anthony Frate came back from an injury that had sidelined him the last few weeks to post five tackles. Jesse Clum, Johnny Josef and Watson all recorded interceptions. The Raiders totaled 372 yards in the game while holding the Yellow Jackets to 141, 58 of which came on one play. Mount Union converted 11 of 20 third down opportunities, while holding Baldwin-Wallace to just one of 11. The Purple & White had the ball for over 41 minutes in the contest. The win was Mount Union's 102nd consecutive regular season victory, and the 92nd win in a row against Ohio Athletic Conference competition. The Purple Raiders have now won 117 of the last 119 games they've played. Mount Union returns home to host Muskingum next week. The Fighting Muskies picked up their first win of the season Saturday and will enter the game 1-7 overall and 1-6 in the conference. Last year Mount Union defeated Muskingum 58-0 in New Concord, and have won 15 straight in the series dating back to a tie in 1988. Muskingum's last win came in 1984, but the Muskies still lead in the series, which dates back to 1906, 29-27-2.
