Mount Union plans stadium expansion

ALLIANCE, Ohio -  Construction vehicles will be humming at Mount Union Stadium this week as the college prepares for expansion of the covered west stands and renovations to other areas of the stadium.

According to Patrick Heddleston, vice president for business affairs at the college, the biggest project will be the expansion of the covered stands by 80 feet to the north, adding seating for 600 people.  The addition will take the seating capacity for Mount Union Stadium to 5,300.

Many of the improvements will be noticeable and others less so for fans who attend Mount Union College and Alliance High School football games as well as other events in the stadium.  The improvements will include replacement of public restrooms in the west stands, expansion and renovation of the public restrooms in the east stands, replacement of concrete walkways within the tunnels, replacement of walkways at the south end of the stadium, completion of new exterior brick walls and wrought iron fencing at the north end of the stadium, and relocation of a light pole on the west side.

In addition, Heddleston said the natural grass playing surface within the stadium will be seeded.

The general contractor for the project is Hammond Construction which oversaw last year’s improvements.  The improvements will be completed in early August to be ready for the start of the Aviators’ and Purple Raiders’ football seasons.
